For decades, that was that — until late December 2016, when an astonishing piece of footage emerged from the Beqaa Valley near the Syrian border. A female bear and her cub, caught on a mobile phone camera in the snow, gave scientists and nature lovers alike a rare glimpse of a creature that had not been seen in Lebanon for over 60 years.

This sighting sparked widespread excitement and debate: Was this a stray visitor from populations still surviving in Turkey, Iran, or the Caucasus, or a sign that the species still clings on in the wild edges of the Levant? No definitive answer exists yet, but the footage reminded everyone that nature always holds surprises.

A Struggling Species in a Fragmented World

Across its broader range, the Syrian brown bear is endangered and increasingly rare. While the global species of brown bear (Ursus arctos) is listed as “least concern” due to its large total population in parts of Eurasia and North America, the Middle Eastern subspecies faces steep declines and fragmented populations.

Today, healthy populations are found in mountain forests of Turkey, Iran, Iraq, and the Caucasus, with hundreds rather than thousands of individuals surviving in isolated pockets. In contrast, the bear is considered extinct across large parts of its former range — including Lebanon, Syria, Israel, and Jordan — meaning it no longer has a stable, resident population there.

The pressures that drove the bear’s decline are familiar: overhunting, habitat fragmentation, and the expansion of agriculture and human settlements into once-wild landscapes. But long before modern conservationists counted bears, they loomed large in the region’s imagination.

The Syrian Brown Bear in the Bible

The image of a mother bear defending her cubs is invoked proverbially on three occasions (2 Samuel 17:8; Hosea 13:8; Proverbs 17:12), emphasizing both ferocity and inevitability.

Wojtek, The Syrian Brown Bear Poland Adopted

Beyond scripture, the Syrian brown bear occupies an unexpected place in modern history through the story of Wojtek. Acquired as a cub by Polish soldiers in Iran during the Second World War, Wojtek became the unofficial mascot of the Polish II Corps and was formally enlisted with the rank of private. Remarkably social and intelligent, he adopted many human habits: riding in truck cabs, showering with soldiers, wrestling playfully, and sharing their rations. He developed a taste for fruit, honey, marmalade, sweet syrups, and beer, and was even issued a cigarette allowance, which he preferred to chew rather than smoke.

Though prone to occasional mischief — raiding supplies or pilfering laundry — Wojtek was widely trusted and sought out human company, often choosing to sleep among the soldiers even after being given his own quarters. Wartime lore credits him with detecting an enemy spy and carrying artillery shells during the Battle of Monte Cassino, an act that inspired the emblem of the 22nd Artillery Supply Company and earned him a promotion to corporal. After the war, Wojtek retired to Edinburgh Zoo, where he became a beloved public figure.

At first glance, a bear may seem like a creature far removed from everyday life in the Levant. Yet its decline tells a larger story — one of ecological change, cultural loss, and our complicated relationship with the natural world.

There’s a familiar line people like to repeat in Lebanon: wherever you dig, you’ll find ruins. A construction site turns into an archaeological dig. A routine repair exposes an ancient wall. Remove soil from a garden and find a 1,800 year old Roman amphitheater buried below. History is always just beneath the surface.

It’s a comforting idea that suggests continuity. Civilization layered neatly on top of civilization. But it also limits how far back we allow Lebanon’s story to go, because ruins generally assume people. They assume cities, empires, and names we recognize from history class. They imply that relevant history begins when humans start leaving things behind. So it’s worth asking a question — one that almost never comes up when Lebanon’s past is discussed:

Did the land that makes up Lebanon today have dinosaurs? The answer, surprisingly, is yes.

Ninety Million Year Old Footprints

In the hills of Mount Lebanon, along the road between Batha and Ghosta, there are limestone surfaces marked by dinosaur footprints. Not replicas or illustrations, but actual impressions left in soft ground more than ninety million years ago, later hardened into stone.

They’re easy to miss. There are no fences, no dramatic signage. You could drive past them without ever knowing what you’re looking at. But paleontologists who have studied the site describe multiple trackways spread across a broad area — evidence that several dinosaurs crossed this terrain, not just one.

Most of the tracks are attributed to sauropods, the massive, long-necked herbivores that tend to dominate our mental image of dinosaurs. Others may belong to theropods or ornithopods, smaller bipedal dinosaurs whose footprints can be difficult to distinguish from one another.

What matters more than the exact classification is the setting. Dinosaur footprints only form under specific conditions: flat ground, soft sediment, moisture. In other words, the kind of environment we rarely associate with Mount Lebanon today.

Where there are now steep roads and terraced hillsides, there were once coastal flats — low, open landscapes where large animals could walk, pause, and move on. The mountain, as we know it, hadn’t yet become itself.

Teeth in the South

Footprints are one thing. Body fossils are another, and Lebanon has very few of those when it comes to dinosaurs. But in the early 2000s, researchers documented the discovery of two fossilized dinosaur teeth near Jezzine.

They date to the Early Cretaceous period and are believed to belong to brachiosaurid sauropods — enormous plant-eaters with long forelimbs and elevated necks. The kind of animals that required vast amounts of vegetation to survive.

The teeth were found in sandstone deposited by rivers and deltas. Which means that parts of what is now southern Lebanon were once watered plains, shaped by flowing water and capable of supporting animals of astonishing size.

This is an important detail. Lebanon’s prehistoric story is often reduced to one idea: sea. And it’s true that much of the region spent long stretches underwater — but not all of it, and not all at once. Lebanon wasn’t just submerged, it was changing.

Why Dinosaurs Don’t Fit the Story Usually Told

Ask around and most people might tell you Lebanon doesn’t have dinosaur remains. Or that if it did, we would know about it. Dinosaur remans are generally found in places with vast spaces — deserts, plains, or badlands. Not to a small, crowded country better known for human settlement ruins and reinvention.

Part of this has to do with geology. Lebanon is famous among paleontologists for something else entirely: its extraordinary marine fossils. Sites like Haqel and Hjoula preserve fish, rays, crustaceans, and squid from the time when the region lay beneath the ancient Tethys Sea.

These fossils are remarkable in their detail. They’re displayed in museums across Europe and beyond, often admired with little reference to Lebanon itself.

According to botanical records maintained by Kew’s Plants of the World Online, Bromus bikfayensis is native exclusively to Lebanon and grows primarily in the subtropical biome of the region. It is known only in two forested areas in Bikfaya and Douma, two sites separated by 50 kilometers, making them genetically isolated and vulnerable.

Its very name reveals its heritage. In botanical Latin, the suffix “-ensis” refers to geographical origin — in this case, Bikfaya, a mountain town east of Beirut. This naming practice preserves local identities in scientific form, long after they might otherwise fade from global awareness.

A Species in Peril

Recent observations and conservation listings indicate that this grass is among Lebanon’s most critically endangered vascular plants — part of a broader “Red List” of species under threat. Though small and easily overlooked, its risk of disappearing entirely reflects a deeper crisis: grassland habitats in Lebanon are under severe pressure from development, grazing, and climate change.
