There are figures in Lebanese history who belong to a sect, a party, or a fleeting political moment. And then there is Imam Moussa al-Sadr — a man who seemed to belong to the idea of Lebanon itself: wounded, plural, aspiring, and unfinished.

Nearly half a century after his disappearance in Libya in 1978, al-Sadr remains less a memory than a presence. His absence is political; his voice, contemporary. In a country accustomed to the recycling of leaders and the erosion of institutions, he endures as something rarer: a moral reference point and institution builder.

Cleric Beyond the Pulpit

Born in 1928 in Qom to a distinguished clerical family of Lebanese origin, al-Sadr arrived in Tyre in 1959 at a time when Lebanon’s Shi‘a community lived on the margins of the state — economically deprived, politically underrepresented, and socially neglected. The South and the Beqaa were not only peripheral geographically; they were peripheral in the national imagination.

What he encountered was not just poverty, but structural abandonment. Roads were unpaved, schools underfunded, hospitals scarce. The promise of the Lebanese state — so vibrant in Beirut and its suburbs — was dimmed at the country’s edges. Al-Sadr understood that sermons alone could not address such realities.

He responded not only as a religious scholar, but as an institution-builder. He founded schools, vocational centers, charitable associations, and social networks that sought to restore both material stability and collective dignity.

In 1969, he became the first head of the Supreme Islamic Shi‘ite Council, formalizing Shi‘a representation within Lebanon’s confessional framework. This was not a withdrawal into sectarianism; it was an insistence that all citizens required recognition.

Yet even as he consolidated communal leadership, he resisted the language of grievance as destiny. He insisted that dignity for one community could not come at the expense of another. His was a language of empowerment without isolation — a rare dialect in Lebanon’s political grammar.

Movement of the Deprived

In 1974, al-Sadr launched the Movement of the Deprived (Harakat al-Mahrumin), a socio-political initiative aimed at confronting structural inequality across sectarian lines. The name itself was deliberate: it framed injustice as a national, not exclusively Shi‘a, condition. From this movement emerged the Amal Movement, which would later become a central actor in Lebanese politics. But at its inception, Amal was conceived less as a militia than as an instrument of communal self-defense and social organization.

Al-Sadr’s rhetoric during this period was both urgent and measured. He condemned sectarianism even as he maneuvered within its constraints. He defended Palestinian resistance to Israeli occupation while warning against Lebanon becoming a substitute battlefield for regional conflicts. He called for reform of the state — equitable development, stronger institutions, national unity — not its disintegration.

In one of his most cited declarations, he affirmed: “Lebanon is a final homeland for all its sons.” At a time when ideological currents — Arab nationalism, Palestinian armed struggle, rising Islamism — were pulling the country in competing directions, al-Sadr articulated a vision that was simultaneously rooted and reconciliatory. Lebanon, for him, was not a temporary arrangement nor an arena; it was a covenant.

Theology of Coexistence

What distinguished al-Sadr most was not only his political activism, but his theological imagination. He cultivated close relations with Christian leaders, and frequently appeared in churches as well as mosques. In a gesture that still resonates symbolically, he delivered addresses during Christian commemorations, framing Islam and Christianity as co-guardians of Lebanon’s pluralism.

He spoke of coexistence not as tolerance — a word that implies hierarchy — but as partnership. Sect, in his vocabulary, was not a fortress to defend against others, but a living tradition capable of contributing to a shared civic horizon.

At a time when communal anxieties were intensifying, al-Sadr’s discourse challenged both Muslim-Christian suspicions and intra-Muslim tensions. He did not deny difference; but he sought to discipline it within a national ethic. His sermons often invoked justice as a divine imperative that transcended faction. Religion, in his hands, became an argument against fragmentation. In retrospect, his language appears almost revelatory; Lebanon would soon descend into civil war.

Militias would proliferate. Foreign interventions would multiply. The grammar of coexistence would be replaced by the logic of survival. And then, in August 1978, during an official visit to Libya, he vanished.

The Disappearance That Became a Symbol

Al-Sadr’s disappearance under the regime of Muammar Gaddafi transformed him into something more than a political leader. He became a symbol — of injustice unresolved, of truth deferred, of a leadership interrupted at the threshold of catastrophe.

For the Shi‘a community, he was an absent father figure. For many Lebanese across sectarian lines, he was the lost mediator — a figure whose moral authority might have tempered the descent into total war. His disappearance froze him in a moment of possibility. Unlike other leaders whose legacies were reshaped by wartime compromises, al-Sadr remained suspended in promise.

The Lebanese state has periodically revived investigations into his fate, and his case remains officially open. Yet beyond legal proceedings lies a deeper inquiry: what political culture might have emerged had he remained present? Would his insistence on state reform have survived the centrifugal forces of war? Or was his very moderation destined to be eclipsed by the militancy of the era? These unanswered questions have become part of his mythos.

The Unfinished Project

To revisit al-Sadr today is not to indulge nostalgia, but to confront the incompleteness of the Lebanese experiment. He sought social justice without revolutionary nihilism, sectarian representation without sectarian supremacy, resistance without state fragmentation, and faith without fanaticism.

These formulations remain strikingly relevant in a Lebanon grappling with economic collapse, institutional paralysis, and renewed sectarian anxieties. The margins he championed have expanded; deprivation has become national. His language of “the deprived” now echoes beyond any single community.

Yet his legacy is not immune to contestation. Like all political founders, he has been appropriated, reinterpreted, and sometimes simplified. His thought was more complex than the slogans later associated with his name. He navigated contradictions — between clerical authority and civic nationalism, between communal defense and national unity — with a pragmatism that defies easy categorization.

Perhaps that complexity is precisely why he endures. He did not offer Lebanon a utopia. He offered it a disciplined hope — one anchored in institutions, dialogue, and moral accountability.

Imam Moussa al-Sadr was not free of political compromise; no Lebanese leader is. But his legacy persists because it gestures toward a possibility Lebanon has yet to realize: a state that protects its margins, a society that transcends its fractures, and a political class that understands leadership as stewardship rather than inheritance.

His disappearance remains a national wound. His vision remains an open question. And in a country where history is often cyclical and futures provisional, that question — of justice, coexistence, and national dignity — may still be the most urgent inheritance he left behind.

Sheikh Abou Hassan Aref Halawi remains one of Lebanon’s most revered spiritual leaders. His legacy, however, extends beyond Druze moral authority. Rooted in the inner discipline of the muwaḥḥidūn (Unitarians), his vision of leadership offers an introspective model of authority with profound relevance for Lebanon’s persistent fragmentation, sectarianism, and quest for unity. In a country where authority is often measured in volume, spectacle, and force, Sheikh Abou Hassan Aref Halawi represented something rarer: restraint.

Early Life

Born in Barouk in the Shouf mountains in 1899, Halawi grew up in a landscape where spiritual tradition and communal responsibility were inseparable from daily life. The mountainous terrain that shaped Druze history would also shape his temperament: contemplative, steadfast, and inwardly anchored.

From early youth, Halawi dedicated himself to religious study and spiritual discipline. Biographical accounts describe his immersion in sacred texts and his pursuit of contemplative retreat in the hills surrounding Barouk. Such practices were not unusual within Druze spiritual formation, yet in Halawi’s case they deepened into a lifelong path of ascetic devotion. By his mid-thirties, he was invested with the white turban symbolizing spiritual maturity and piety within the Druze tradition. This elevation marked recognition not of institutional power but of inner refinement.

Throughout the twentieth century, as Lebanon moved from Ottoman rule to French Mandate and eventually to independence, Halawi’s presence matured into that of a moral reference for the Druze community. He was a highly respected Druze spiritual guide whose authority extended beyond Lebanon to Druze communities across the region.

Beyond Ritual to Inner Purity

At the heart of Halawi’s leadership was a deep understanding of divine unity, a core tenet of Druze theology. The faith, esoteric in nature, reserves sacred knowledge for the initiated ʿuqqāl (“the knowledgeable”), while the majority, the juhhāl (“the uninitiated”), engage primarily through communal rituals. Halawi embodied this principle: his moral clarity and restraint arose not from outward showmanship but from an interior journey toward understanding the divine.

This emphasis on self-restraint and personal purity contrasts sharply with Lebanon’s often theatrical and factional politics. While Druze leadership, like other communities, has been periodically drawn into political struggle, Halawi’s reputation rested on inner discipline rather than alignment with external power — a rare quality in a society shaped by force and spectacle.

Moral Authority in a Fractured Republic

Lebanon’s spiritual leaders often operate in the shadow of political spectacle. Halawi’s influence, however, transcended partisan divides. He did not align with community leaders during the Lebanese Civil War (1975–1990), instead mediating crises within the Druze community and providing a moral compass in moments of upheaval.

This stance was not without tension. Though he avoided direct political engagement, his insistence on unity and restraint contrasted with the military factionalism of the era, raising the question of whether a leadership rooted in inner discipline can endure in a society that rewards external power.

The Israeli Druze Edict

Halawi’s authority extended beyond Lebanon. In the 1990s, he issued a religious edict forbidding Israeli Druze from serving in the Israeli military, reflecting his commitment to spiritual unity over political division. For Halawi, participation in military conflict against neighboring Arab societies, including Lebanon, contradicted communal solidarity.

Gentleness as Strength, Leadership of Presence

Halawi’s leadership was defined not by speeches or displays of power but by presence. Visitors described his austere life, detached from material ambition yet suffused with inner peace. He unified through example, a subtle yet compelling presence in a landscape dominated by political spectacle.

This approach, however, raises questions about relevance in modern Lebanon, where material success and visible power are often prioritized. In the postwar era, Halawi’s restraint contrasts sharply with the bombastic style of contemporary leaders, challenging society to reconsider what true leadership entails.

In an era also defined by rapid economic and social change, Halawi’s emphasis on interior discipline and moral steadiness resonates differently across generations. For some, it represents continuity and rootedness; for others, it raises broader questions about the evolving role of religious authority in public life.

A Model of Leadership for a Fragmented Society

On 26 November 2003, Sheikh Abou Hassan Aref Halawi passed away in Barouk at the age of approximately 103. His death marked the completion of a century-long journey of spiritual service. Tens of thousands mourned him, underscoring the breadth of his impact.

Halawi’s legacy invites reflection on an interior mode of leadership in a fractured society. His authority emerged from moral gravity rather than institutional power.

As Lebanon navigates the tension between tradition and modernity, unity and division, Halawi’s life remains a quiet yet compelling reminder: Can a leadership rooted in restraint guide a nation captivated by the theater of brute power?

Born in Bmekkine on September 8, 1891, he belonged to a Greek Catholic family whose prominence within the Antiochene Church extended back to the eighteenth century.

He was the long-awaited son after six daughters. His father, Antoine Chiha, co-founder of the Pharaon and Chiha Bank in 1876, died in 1903, leaving behind a financial institution that embodied commerce, continuity, and international engagement. For Michel Chiha, inheritance was never just material, it was moral and intellectual as well — a transmission of habits, standards, and obligations that he would later reference throughout his life.

Commerce and Memory

Chiha’s evocation of his forebears offers a revealing portrait of the world that formed him. Writing in 1942, he recalled his father and grandfather moving confidently through global networks of trade — selling silk, buying coal, receiving gold and letters of credit — animated by a love of life as much as by commerce (Chiha, “Le vieux passage,” Le Jour, December 25, 1942). These men were neither adventurers nor ideologues, but traders in a classical sense: prudent, worldly, and anchored in reputation.

This environment fostered in Chiha an early understanding of confidence as a social currency. Trade depended not on force but on credibility, on the accumulation of trust across borders, confessions, and cultures. This lesson would later migrate from the realm of banking into Chiha’s conception of politics, where confidence — between communities and institutions — would become a central principle.

Education and Temperament

Chiha received his formal education at the Jesuit Université Saint-Joseph in Beirut, graduating in 1906. His intellectual formation, however, was shaped as much by travel as by study. Of delicate health, he accompanied his mother on frequent journeys to Europe and spent extended periods in England, particularly in Manchester, where he lived with an uncle.

These early experiences introduced him to a culture markedly different from the French intellectual tradition in which he was otherwise steeped. Chiha developed a lasting admiration for English pragmatism, and skepticism toward abstraction. Looking back decades later, he recalled his student years not with nostalgia but with a sense of continuity, emphasizing moderation, temperament, and proportion (Chiha, “À propos d’un sujet de concours,” Le Jour, June 14, 1946).

At sixteen, he entered the family bank after gaining experience in an English commercial firm. Commerce, for Chiha, was not an impediment to intellectual life, it was a school of realism — one that trained judgment and discouraged illusion.

Exile and Awakening

The First World War interrupted this early trajectory. Like many Lebanese, Chiha went into exile to escape Ottoman repression between 1914 and 1918, settling in Egypt. Cairo, Helouan, Alexandria, and Ras-el-Bar became the geography of his formative displacement.

During these years, Chiha studied law and obtained his degree, while immersing himself in the cultural and political life of the Levantine diaspora. Anticipating the defeat of the Ottoman Empire and the reconfiguration of the region, he joined a small group of similarly minded intellectuals, such as Charles Corm and Petro Trad, and determined to prepare the intellectual groundwork for a future Lebanese state.

One of their efforts culminated in Ébauches, a French-language journal defined by its non-partisan ethos and its deliberate refusal of dogma. Its motto — “take me as you find me” — captured Chiha’s instinctive mistrust of ideological rigidity (Chiha, letter to Hector Khlat, wartime correspondence). Politics, he believed even then, had to remain provisional, attentive to circumstance rather than abstract principle.

Exile also deepened Chiha’s cultural pursuits. His correspondence reveals sustained engagement with music, literature, archaeology, and art. These interests were not ornamental, they reflected a belief that civilization could not be reduced to politics alone, and that cultural continuity was as vital to nation-building as institutional design.

Return to Ruins

Chiha returned to Beirut in 1919 to a country devastated by famine and war. Nearly a quarter of the population had perished, and much of the built environment lay in ruins. Writing shortly after his return, he contributed to La Revue Phénicienne which was established by Charles Corm in Beirut. In this period, he described Beirut as “a ghost town; ruins, sadness, and silence everywhere” (Chiha, letter to Hector Khlat, Beirut, March 28, 1919).

Despite exhaustion and disillusionment, Chiha assumed responsibility for the Pharaon and Chiha Bank at one of the most difficult moments in Lebanon’s history. Economic reconstruction, he understood, was inseparable from political stabilization. Credit, confidence, and institutional reliability were not secondary concerns; they were foundational.

His personal letters from this period reveal a sober appraisal of public life. Writing in 1920, he lamented the stagnation of administration and the mechanical invocation of laissez-faire principles, while affirming a cautious optimism grounded in effort and responsibility: “being optimists by principle, we are a few to react against the malaise and to keep our confidence” (Chiha, letter to Dr. Mahfoud, Beirut, November 12, 1920). This combination of critique and restraint would become characteristic of his public interventions.

Greater Lebanon

The proclamation of Greater Lebanon on September 1, 1920, following the Treaty of Versailles, marked a decisive moment. For Chiha, this was neither a romantic culmination nor an abstract fulfillment of nationalist aspiration. Statehood was a fragile construction — one that required careful calibration between geography, demography, economy, and culture.

Chiha did not conceive Lebanon as a homogeneous nation modeled on European precedents. His formative experiences — family mediation, exile, commerce, and cultural plurality — had taught him that Lebanon could exist only as a negotiated entity. Diversity was not an obstacle to be erased but a condition to be managed through balance, guarantees, and restraint.

In the years that followed, Chiha would play a central role in shaping the intellectual framework of the Lebanese state.

His innate reluctance to engage in active politics was reflected in the long hesitation before he finally declared himself a candidate for the minority seat. Although he eventually agreed to stand — largely due to pressure from his friends Omar Beyhum and Omar Daouk, who were eager to include him on their joint electoral list — he was deeply appalled by the unscrupulous tactics commonly employed during election campaigns. At one point, his revulsion was so strong that he nearly withdrew his candidacy midway through the election. Only a sense of loyalty to his fellow candidates kept him from stepping aside altogether.

Despite eventually being elected in 1925 as a Deputy of Beirut for religious minorities in parliament, his contribution to nation-building lay less in political office than in constitutional sensibility: the insistence that power be limited, authority dispersed, and coexistence institutionalized rather than assumed.

Banking on the Ethics of Trust

Chiha’s reflections on banking illuminate his broader political philosophy. He helped establish the Beirut Stock Exchange in 1941 and, in a 1945 essay, he rejected prevailing caricatures of financiers as either plutocrats or mere technicians. Banking, he argued, originated as an act of common faith. A banker was above all a man of credence — one entrusted with collective confidence (Chiha, “Carrières,” La Revue des Deux Mondes, 1945).

This conception extended beyond finance. Trust, once broken, was difficult to restore; authority, once abused, lost legitimacy. For Chiha, the same principles governed pluralistic societies. Political systems, like financial ones, depended on credibility, restraint, and the careful management of risk.

It was this logic that underpinned his approach to Lebanon’s institutional architecture. Confessional balance, economic liberalism, and limited state power were not ideological commitments but practical safeguards — mechanisms designed with the intent to prevent domination and reassure communities in a volatile regional environment.

Fragile Conditions

Michel Chiha’s nation-building project was neither utopian nor meant to be static. It assumed fragility as a permanent condition. Lebanon, he believed, could survive only as a country of moderation and a carefully negotiated coexistence.

This vision has often been criticized for entrenching sectarianism or privileging economic elites — such critiques cannot be dismissed. Yet they overlook the historical wager at the heart of Chiha’s thought: that in a deeply plural society, stability could not be imposed by force or ideology, but only cultivated through confidence, restraint and equitable representation.

Chiha did not seek to invent a new society. He sought to preserve an existing one by giving it institutional form. His contribution to modern Lebanon lay precisely in this effort to translate lived plurality into political structure, but the political ethos of his time wasn’t so different:

“It’s always the same old story. In Lebanon political concessions usually mean rushing backwards into self-protecting policies. What poor thinking! A strong President would follow the Constitution and not seek re-election…Lebanon’s best hopes lie not in the might of an individual but in that individual’s integrity.”

• Michel Chiha told Le Jour on July 24th, 1952. The attainment of Independence in 1943 and the election of his brother-in-law Béchara El Khoury as President of the Republic, established Chiha as the Administration’s main advisor, a role which he would fulfil until May 1949 when Khoury decided to extend his presidential mandate for a further six years, against Chiha’s will.

Michel Chiha never saw Lebanon’s fragility as failure. He understood its pluralism, volatility, and vulnerability to regional forces as structural, not temporary flaws. However, he didn’t anticipate how these conditions would evolve once power left the hands of those he trusted to manage it.

Confidence; Betrayed and Misjudged

Chiha passed away in 1954, and over seventy years later, Lebanon’s tragedy lies not in its peculiarities, but in how they were exploited and hollowed out. The trust his system relied on — between communities, institutions, and the economy — was squandered.

Chiha’s vision wasn’t just betrayed; it may have also been misjudged despite his best intentions. He was right about much: Geography mattered, some form of power-sharing was inevitable, and pluralism couldn’t be denied without catastrophic cost.

But Chiha overestimated the integrity of elites, imagining that communal leaders would act as guardians, not self-serving opportunists. He created institutions that were inherited by warlords and political machines. He also treated sects as stable, ignoring class divisions and social change. By embedding sectarianism in state institutions, he transformed it into a permanent organizing force, incentivizing, rather than containing, sectarianism.

His faith in economic interdependence proved to be equally misplaced. Economic growth was uneven, and when the economy stalled, the absence of strong social welfare institutions left citizens relying on sectarian structures for protection.

Chiha’s vision of neutrality also rested on unrealized conditions — regional restraint and external guarantees Lebanon never had. In a region driven by hard power, Lebanon’s openness invited external intervention and conflict.

The question is: Was Chiha’s approach inevitable? Almost certainly, but not entirely.

Lebanon emerged from imperial design and communal bargaining, not revolution. In this context, Chiha’s pluralism was defensive realism, not idealism. However, where inevitability ends, choice begins. Pluralism may have been unavoidable, but its institutional entrenchment wasn’t. Chiha prioritized stability over evolution, and what should have been temporary became permanent. Time, which he thought would soften identities, only hardened them.

Ironically, his system worked just enough to delay reform — stabilizing without transforming, reassuring without integrating. When collapse came, it was total. But it wouldn’t be fair to blame him entirely for that; rather, his system was as a starting point which should have evolved.

Chiha’s legacy is vital — not necessarily as a model to restore, but as a warning which was heeded too briefly and trusted for too long.

As parliamentary elections approach, the question is no longer what Lebanon’s leaders promise — as they have long spent that currency — but what its voters continue to reward. In Thomas Jefferson’s words, “the government you elect is the government you deserve.”

Lebanon will recover not through empty promises, but when confidence is reclaimed from those who trade it for themselves.

When Kenneth Khouri bought a disc-recording machine in Miami in the late 1940s — almost on a whim — he did not imagine that the decision would alter the cultural destiny of Jamaica. Yet from that accidental purchase emerged the island’s first recording studio, its first pressing plant, and the industrial foundations of ska, rocksteady, and reggae. Long before Jamaican music conquered the world, it had to be pressed somewhere. It had to be believed in. Khouri was the one who did both.

Born in 1917 in St. Mary, Jamaica, and raised between rural Highgate and Kingston, Khouri was the child of layered migrations. His father arrived from Lebanon at the age of twelve, fleeing war with his parents, and would remain in Jamaica for most of his life, returning only once, at seventy-one. His mother was Jamaican-born of Cuban descent. Khouri himself rarely romanticized these journeys, but he understood them instinctively.

“They were running away from the wars, I guess… this is just where they ended up.”

That phrase — this is just where they ended up — could serve as a thesis for much of the Lebanese diaspora in the Caribbean. It also frames Khouri’s own life, shaped less by grand design than by decisive responses to circumstance.

As a young man, Khouri worked in his father’s dry goods and furniture businesses in Kingston, and later with Joseph Issa, part of the Lebanese-Syrian commercial networks that underpinned much of Jamaica’s retail economy. Issa’s company distributed jukeboxes across the island, exposing Khouri to popular music not just as abstraction, but as circulation — sound moving through space, shops, bars, and bodies.

“I didn’t like the furniture business. I was born musically inclined.”

That inclination found its opening when Khouri traveled to Miami to seek medical treatment for his father. While there, he overheard a conversation about a disc-recording machine. He bought it, along with a hundred blank discs, for $350. An instinctive purchase. As soon as he returned, he began recording voices on the machine.

“People were so fascinated with it, I couldn’t find enough time to do them.”

Back in Kingston, Khouri built his first studio. It was a small wooden building with a zinc roof, where recordings were mainly done at night to avoid the daily noise of the traffic. He began recording voices, then calypso performances in nightclubs. He mailed his discs to Decca Records in London, asking if they could be pressed. They said yes. The first song he recorded — Lord Flea’s “Naughty Little Flea (Where Did the Little Flea Go)” — became a modest hit and a milestone: the dawn of Jamaica’s modern recording industry.

By 1947, working out of 129 King Street with his wife Gloria, Khouri had built the island’s first true recording studio, Records Limited. One microphone. One track. No precedent.

“Nobody else had recording facilities in Jamaica at that time… so I am the complete pioneer of everything.”

For the first time, Jamaicans could hear their own voices played back through machines — unchanged, unfiltered, and unmistakably their own. In partnership with Alec Durie of Times Variety Store in Downtown Kingston, Khouri launched Times Records, whose calypso releases sold out quickly.

Unsatisfied with relying on overseas pressing, he traveled to California, acquired record-manufacturing equipment — and after an initial learning curve — taught himself the trade. Jamaica’s first pressing plant followed.

Khouri was part of a small group of early industry builders — including Stanley Motta of Motta’s Recording Studio — who helped ensure Jamaican music could be recorded, preserved, and circulated locally.

By the mid-1950s, Khouri was producing mento, jazz, and international releases under franchise agreements with American labels like Mercury. In 1957, he relocated operations to Marcus Garvey Drive, founding Federal Records and transforming Records Limited into its subsidiary. Federal would become the beating industrial heart of Jamaican music. Artists and producers gravitated toward him because there was nowhere else to go.

“Everybody that was in the record business passed through my hands.”

Among those who passed through were Prince Buster, Hopeton Lewis, Clement “Coxsone” Dodd, Duke Reid, and a young Chris Blackwell — who once asked Khouri to help launch Island Records in London. Khouri declined, choosing Jamaica over the metropole despite allowing Island to use Federal Records as the hub for early Island Records productions. His studio became a crucible where ska hardened into rocksteady, and rocksteady gestured toward reggae.

When a fire damaged part of Federal in the 1960s, Khouri rebuilt — this time as a world-class studio that drew international artists, including Paul Anka. Federal Records released hit after hit, embedding Jamaican sound into global circulation.

The 1970s brought political violence, illness, and eventual migration to the United States. In 1981, Khouri sold Federal Records to Rita Marley, Bob Marley’s wife, who renamed it Tuff Gong. It was an ending, but also a confirmation: the infrastructure Khouri built was strong enough to be inherited.

Kenneth Khouri’s son, Paul, explained in 2003 that his father began recording mento musicians who were performing in hotels, motivated not by financial gain or recognition, but by a genuine interest in music.

Paul also mentioned that even in his old age, his father continued to enjoy playing his records loudly, testing the limits of his mother’s patience. Kenneth often joked that music was his first love, and that his wife of 67 years came second. He passed away at the age of 87 and his sons continued aspects of the business abroad, while his imprint remained indelible at home.

Shortly before his death, Kenneth Khouri was awarded Jamaica’s Silver Musgrave Medal — an honor that, while significant, understated the scale of his contribution.

In Jamaica, he created the conditions for a nation to hear itself: pressing sound into permanence before it dissipated into the air.

As the tenth anniversary of Father Grégoire Haddad’s passing approaches, his contributions to social justice, secularism, and interfaith dialogue continue to resonate. His work in Lebanon during a time of political and religious turmoil highlighted his commitment to a society that valued inclusivity and human dignity. While the challenges he faced were great, his approach to social and religious reform remains relevant in a country still grappling with division.

A Life of Rebellion and Reform

Grégoire Haddad, born Nakhle Amine Haddad in Souk El Gharb in 1924, came from a mixed religious background — his father was Protestant, and his mother was Melkite Greek Catholic. He received an education from a variety of religious institutions, which helped shape his later views on faith and society.

Grégoire began studying theology at Saint-Joseph University at a young age. Ordained as a priest in 1949, he quickly became involved in Lebanon’s social movements, aiming to bridge the divide between the country’s diverse religious and political communities.

In the late 1950s, amid Lebanon’s growing sectarian tensions, Haddad founded the Lebanese Mouvement Sociale (Social Movement), a non-sectarian organization that sought peaceful social development and greater solidarity. It was one of Lebanon’s first NGOs, and continues to be one of the most active there today. For Father Grégoire, social action was perceived from the perspective of socio-economic development. To this end, he mobilized hundreds of young people, in schools and universities, under the banner of volunteering in the service of the most disadvantaged. He also worked closely with Shi’ite leader Imam Musa al-Sadr to foster Christian-Muslim dialogue, both of whom shared a commitment to reducing sectarian divides and promoting social initiatives.

Taken in the context of Lebanon’s sectarian and social challenges, his above phrase — “love is the art of all arts” — reflects the view that social cooperation and human relationships require deliberate effort, much like any practiced craft. It also implies that constructive change depends on cultivating forms of interaction rooted in respect and shared responsibility, rather than in fear or division.

Advocacy for Secularism and Civil Rights

In 1968, he was appointed Melkite Archbishop of Beirut and Jbeil. This was one of the most significant roles within his community — second only to that of the Patriarch — due to the political, social, economic, and religious importance of the diocese.

His leadership was marked by his strong advocacy for secularism, particularly the separation of religious influence from civil matters. One of his most notable acts was removing his religious affiliation from his civil records — a bold statement about valuing individuals for their personal qualities, rather than their religious identity. This bold stance earned him the nickname “the Red Bishop,” reflecting his progressive and often controversial views. He was also known as “the Bishop of the Poor.”

“If one is a true Christian, he should be able to accept people as they are, and if people wish to exist in a certain manner, then no one should deter them from doing so, and it is the state’s duty to provide them with the right laws to support their way of living. In the end, if one wishes to cross out their religion, it does not mean that they have lost faith, and a man should be valued because he is man and not because of the belief he practices.”

Father Grégoire also supported civil marriage, which put him at odds with many religious authorities who viewed it as a challenge to their power. For him, the core of Christianity was about compassion and respect for the rights of others, regardless of their faith. This stance on civil marriage was part of a larger critique.

Challenging Sectarianism

Throughout his life, Father Grégoire was a vocal critic of Lebanon’s sectarian system. He argued that the country’s political and social issues were rooted in the prioritization of religious identity over merit and competence. His work sought to dismantle the sectarian barriers dividing Lebanese society, advocating for a secular state that would promote equality, merit, and human dignity for all.

In 1974, he began publishing the periodical Afaq (Horizons), which explored the relationship between socialism and Christianity and argued for a more engaged, socially active Church. In these articles, he called for a return to the roots of Christianity, arguing that everything, including religious authority and popular practices, should be open to questioning and debate. His views often put him at odds with both the Greek Catholic Patriarch and other religious leaders. Despite the tensions, he remained steadfast in his belief that social justice and secularism were in line with his Christian ethics.

Later Years and Continued Advocacy

Renowned for his simple and modest lifestyle, he rejected the traditional trappings of the prelacy and even traveled by “service” taxi, despite being the bishop of Beirut. He established parish councils throughout his diocese to encourage greater lay participation in the life of the Church, in accordance with the recommendations of the Second Vatican Council. In this spirit, he introduced a system of free parish services for baptisms, weddings, and funerals, asking only for voluntary contributions from parishioners. These contributions were placed into a communal fund whose proceeds were distributed equally among the parish priests, thereby putting wealthy and impoverished parishes on an equal footing. This avant-garde initiative, however, alienated him from part of the diocesan clergy as well as some of the leading notables of his community.

In 1975, due to political and ecclesiastical tensions, Father Grégoire was pressured to resign as Archbishop of Beirut and Byblos. He was appointed to a titular position in Adana, but he chose not to retire from public life. Instead, he devoted himself to social activism, particularly advocating for secular political reforms.

During the 1990s, as Lebanon faced ongoing political instability, he continued his advocacy, working with secular groups like the Civil Society Movement, which he helped establish in 2000. This movement called for political reforms and sought to strengthen Lebanon’s civil institutions, independent of sectarian and political patronage. His ideas also continue to shape secular and reformist groups, including the Civil Society Movement and political reform initiatives, and they resonated strongly during the October 2019 uprising, when youth and civil society activists mobilized against sectarianism and corruption in pursuit of a more equitable, secular state.

His Legacy

Bishop Grégoire Haddad was undoubtedly one of the most controversial religious figures in Lebanon’s modern history. His distinctive view of social action, his understanding of the role of the clergy, and his revolutionary ideas about living the Christian faith drew widespread criticism. Throughout his career, he was frequently targeted by extensive campaigns of denigration.

However, his life was shaped by a vision of a more inclusive, secular Lebanon. He remained committed to the ideals of justice, equality, and dialogue throughout his life, even when facing significant opposition from both religious and political leaders. His work remains a reference point for those seeking to transcend Lebanon’s sectarian divides.

Had Lebanon embraced the voices calling for social empowerment and the dismantling of sectarian systems, it’s impossible not to wonder: where would the country have been today?

Christmas lights flicker along the streets and the stores flood with sales. Beyond the presents and the feasts and the charming Christmas lights, I find myself reflecting on the life of a man. A man who was born over two thousand years ago but whose ideas live on. When I do, I often wonder:

What would Jesus do if he were alive today? Would he, like so many of us, focus on the illusions and distractions of this world, or would he gently call us back to the essence of his message?

In a world increasingly divided by religious affiliation, politics, and cultural divides, I believe it is time to reflect on the true teachings of Jesus — teachings that transcend any one faith, ethnicity, or nationality. Jesus, who came into the world as a humble child in a stable in Bethlehem, spent his life reaching out to the outcast and marginalized, healing the sick, and speaking truth to power. But are we losing the plot by focusing too much on the messenger and not enough on his message? In the Arab world, where the roots of Christianity find their source, the question is not just theological — it’s existential. Christian Arabs, like many others, have watched over the years as their faith has become entwined with politics, war, and sectarian conflict. While Jesus’ message of peace, love, and forgiveness continues to resonate in their hearts, it seems to get lost amid the noise of bombs, gunshots, rhetoric, and division. Yet, perhaps, it is in the darkest moments that his message shines the brightest.

What Would Jesus Do Today?

If Jesus were alive today, walking the streets of modern cities or in quiet countrysides, would he be shocked by what he saw? Would he weep at the divisions among people, the violence, the hatred, and the rampant materialism that seems to drive the world and ruin the environment? Maybe, but I also believe that he would offer a powerful message of reconciliation and healing.

Jesus was not one to shy away from confrontation, but he never used violence to achieve his aims. His weapons were love, compassion, and truth. He broke bread with the outcasts of society — tax collectors, sinners, the impoverished, and those deemed unworthy by the so-called righteous. In a world where refugees are often met with hostility, where poverty is ignored, and where racism is on the rise, Jesus would undoubtedly stand with the oppressed and vulnerable. He would challenge the powerful, not with force, but with words and actions of peace and justice.

In our current global landscape, marked by polarization, Jesus’ message of forgiveness and unity is perhaps more important than ever. I wonder if he would be disappointed to see how his teachings have been manipulated by those in power. How many times have we heard his name invoked by politicians, religious leaders, or activists to justify war, persecution, or discrimination? How many times have people used his words to serve their own agendas, rather than the greater good? Would he not question whether his followers were truly following him — or simply using his name as a shield for their own motives?

Are We Losing the Plot?

I am troubled by how much focus is placed on the messenger, and not enough on the message that he brought. In many circles, the celebration of Christmas has become more about the figure of Christ, the rituals, and the symbols — than about the values he taught. I’m not suggesting that we abandon the traditions or the reverence for Jesus, but perhaps we need to refocus on his life’s work.

Jesus was a revolutionary figure. The greatest rebel of all time. He called for an overturning of established systems, for the breaking of barriers that divided humanity. He preached about a Kingdom that was not of this world, a place where peace, love, and justice would reign supreme. But how many of us truly live by those ideals in our daily lives? How many of us, as citizens of this world, embody the spirit of forgiveness, kindness, and humility that he demonstrated?

In the Arab world, where centuries of Christian history coexist with Islamic traditions, and where the Druze community also emphasizes unity and peace as central to their beliefs, it’s often easy to forget that Jesus’ message is universal. He was not just the savior of Christians; he was a teacher, a prophet, and a figure who stood against the corruption of the powerful. In Islam, Jesus (known as Issa) is also revered as a prophet of peace and a teacher of righteousness, and his message resonates deeply with Muslims as well. His teachings speak to people of all faiths and backgrounds — Muslim, Druze, Jew, Hindu, secular, atheists, and beyond. The message of peace that he carried does not belong to any one group, but to all of humanity.

Blessed Are the Peacemakers

One of the most powerful and enduring parts of Jesus’ teachings is his call for peacemakers. “Blessed are the peacemakers,” he said, “for they will be called children of God.” How often do we see peacemakers in the world today? In the Middle East, where countless lives have been lost to imperialism, war, religion, and political strife, the call for peace can feel like an echo in a distant dream. Yet, it is precisely in the most turbulent moments that peacemakers are most needed.

What would Jesus say to the millions of refugees fleeing war in the Levant and beyond? Would he not open his arms to them? And what about the persecuted minorities who face violence and discrimination at the hands of extremists? Would he not offer them his comfort, his peace? And for us, those who find ourselves caught between cultures, religions, and countries, what is our role in the pursuit of peace?

Jesus’ words are for all people, at all times. We have a unique position to be bridges between worlds — between the East and the West, between Islam and Christianity, between tradition and modernity. We know what it means to hold both faith and culture together, to navigate multiple identities in a world that often seeks to divide.

We also understand the cost of peace. Jesus did not promise peace without sacrifice. He died for his message of love and forgiveness. His death on the cross was not just a symbol; it was the ultimate act of reconciliation between humanity and God, epitomizing peace in the face of violence.

Peacemaking is not just an ideal — it’s a daily practice. In a world divided, the peacemakers must lead the way, showing us how to heal long-festered wounds.

It begins in the small, sometimes inconvenient choices we can make: listening before judging, refusing to dehumanize those we disagree with, and choosing compassion over indifference. It means speaking out against injustice even when it costs us socially or politically, welcoming the stranger even when fear tells us not to, and offering forgiveness when resentment feels easier. Peacemaking happens in our homes, our communities, our churches, mosques, temples, and our public life — wherever we decide that love is stronger than hatred, and that dignity is non-negotiable.

A Call to Return to the Message

As we celebrate Christmas this year, let us not forget the message that Jesus brought to the world. His life and teachings were not about rituals or institutions — they were about love, forgiveness, and peace. It’s easy to get lost in the commercial trappings of Christmas, but if we truly want to honor his birth, we must return to the message he lived and taught.

So, what would Jesus do if he were alive today? He would probably do the same thing he did 2,000 years ago: He would challenge us to love one another, to care for the poor, to heal the brokenhearted, and to fight for justice. He would remind us that the message is more important than the messenger, and that the world will know we are his disciples by the love we show to one another.

Jesus taught us that the greatest commandment is to love God with all our heart, mind, and soul — and to love our neighbors as ourselves. He didn’t specify a nationality or religion, or even the lack of them. He didn’t just say these words; He lived them. He showed us what it meant to love without borders, to forgive without conditions, and to seek peace in the midst of chaos.

He told us that blessed are the peacemakers — any peacemakers, be they black, white, or in between; rich or poor; believers, agnostics, or atheists. Blessed are those who do, rather than don’t, for they will be called the children of God.

For those who question the power of peace and justice, I ask: Where are the great empires of two thousand years ago? They have long since crumbled, as all empires eventually do — because pride always comes before the fall. But as Jesus’ example proves: peace, love, and justice endure forever.

One time, as I drove through the leafy town of Yarzeh in the Baabda district in Lebanon, I decided to park on a quiet side street. I stepped outside my car and saw a statue of Saint Claire. Looking further down the road, I spotted a convent on the left, and on the right, a concrete structure rising through the trees. I walked further out towards it. It was a small chapel characterized by a distinctive architectural style and was known locally as the ‘Clarisses Sisters Unity Chapel.’

Like the best kind of architecture, it was designed for this specific site. The positioning of the structure, its orientation, and the pathways surrounding it all followed the natural topography and took into consideration the immediate surroundings.

Its circular walls, a hyperbolic paraboloid roof, and a sharply angled bell tower emerging diagonally from the center, gave the building a striking geometric appearance.

There were two separate entrances – one designated for the sisters of the convent, and another for external visitors.

The structure was primarily built with exposed concrete, which created a stark, raw aesthetic. This was softened, however, by the use of warm wooden elements in the pews and doors.

Natural light filtered into the space through narrow gaps between the roof and walls, as well as through openings in the bell tower, casting particular focus on the altar area.

The nearby nature was lush and serene, and the space around it offered a simple and quiet garden to relax in.

The History of the Chapel

I noticed that it had sustained damage from a missile strike near the altar which was simply enclosed in plastic – a memento from the civil war.

I did some research and found that it was built between 1965 and 1967 and was designed by a French-Belgian-Lebanese architect called Jacques Liger-Belair.

In 1955, he received a Diploma in Architecture from the Esa Saint-Luc in Brussels, Belgium where he was a valedictorian, while also obtaining a diploma in urban planning from the ISIUA “Institut Supérieur International D’Urbanisme Appliqué Paris-Bruxelles”.

Between 1958 and 1960, he undertook a study trip to the Middle East and India, with the intention of working on Chandigarh, Le Corbusier’s iconic project, then still under construction in India.

He stopped by Lebanon in this time to earn some money before being able to continue to India. During this stopover, he discovered Lebanon and fell in love – on the Saint-Michel beach – with Jacqueline, the Lebanese woman he would marry a few months later. They spent the rest of their lives together.

In 1961, he settled in Lebanon. In addition to his own Modernist Western architectural culture, he was deeply influenced by the diversity and richness of the heritage of the buildings in the Mediterranean.

Jacques’s Presence in Lebanon

Between 1961 and 1976, he completed numerous projects in Lebanon, such as the Nazareth Kindergarten in Achrafieh and the Franciscan chapel in Badaro.

He was also responsible for two educational building programs for the Ministry of National Education and the religious order of the Sisters of the Holy Hearts. He taught at the National Institute of Fine Arts of the Lebanese University (INBA) and at the Lebanese Academy of Fine Arts (ALBA).

At the request of President Fouad Chehab, he worked on the preservation of the coastline and heritage buildings in Jounieh. At the same time, he worked with ETEC (Beirut), Socetec (France), Albini (Italy), and PHP (Germany), and on several projects in Saudi Arabia.

In 1980, he founded AAA (Atelier des Architectes Associés SARL). In 1990, he was a consultant architect for the Agency for Cultural and Technical Cooperation (ACCT) in Paris. He also worked on urban studies and ZAC developments with the Atelier d’Architecture Paris-Venice. In 1991, he was a consultant to Dar el Handasah for the master plan and reconstruction plan for downtown Beirut.

Belair was granted Lebanese citizenship in 1994, and in 1995, he was awarded the Legion of Honor by the French Government. Throughout his career, he published various books and articles on architecture in Lebanon and the Middle East. He passed away in 2024, but his architectural legacy lives on.

The church remains in use today and stands as a hidden gem of Lebanese architecture.

Mario Parodi was an Italian classical guitarist. But he wasn’t just any guitarist. He was one of the most talented to have ever played. What linked him to the Arab world was the place of his birth–the Ottoman Empire, which at that time encompassed parts of the Arabian Peninsula, as well as territories that now form modern-day countries such as Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, and Jordan.

Early Life

He was born in Istanbul (then Constantinople) in 1917 to a Genoese father. The Genoese community was present there in the early 20th century due to their long history of establishing trade and settlements in the city, dating back to the Byzantine era and continuing under Ottoman rule. They had established a significant Genoese quarter, Galata, and maintained a strong presence as traders and merchants.

The Guitar

During his years there, he initially taught himself to play the guitar. Later, he acquired a solid foundation in counterpoint, harmony, and interpretation from pianists who likely adhered to the school of Franz Liszt. It’s worth noting that several Turkish pianists studied or drew inspiration from Liszt following his 1847 visit to Istanbul, which left a lasting legacy in the country.

For this reason, he learned the art of interpretation, which involved managing time, employing rubato, and anticipating and postponing notes. In his work, sound was treated as something to be shaped, much in line with the poetic touches of the late romantic pianists.

Later Life

From 1950 onwards, he lived in Argentina, where he married and had a daughter, Silvia Parodi, who also became a guitarist. Details about his life beyond these facts are scarce, and he seemed to have immersed himself in the world of guitarists in South America until he died in 1970. Given the scarcity of biographical information about him, his recordings serve as small fragments of his life and as a testament to his refined and poetic approach to interpretation. Abdel-Moneim Mustafa, born in 1930 in Omdurman, Sudan, is a prominent Sudanese architect renowned for his contributions to Modernist architecture in Sudan. With a career spanning over six decades, Mustafa is celebrated for his innovative and impactful architectural designs that have shaped the country’s urban landscape.

Mustafa began his academic journey in engineering at the University of Khartoum, where he later shifted to architecture through a fellowship at the University of Leicester in the UK. After completing his studies in 1958, he furthered his education with a master’s degree in Australia and a higher diploma in the Netherlands. His academic journey laid a solid foundation for his later work as an educator and practicing architect.

In 1964, Mustafa joined the University of Khartoum’s Department of Architecture, becoming its first Sudanese lecturer after the country’s independence in 1956. He played a pivotal role in shaping Sudanese architectural education, publishing several scientific papers that examined housing units, real estate trusts, and the impact of transportation on construction costs. Mustafa served as the department head from 1972 to 1974, contributing to the development of architectural thought in Sudan.

In parallel with his academic career, Mustafa worked in the Ministry of Public Works and founded his own architectural practice, Technocon, in 1963. His professional career saw him design various building types, including administrative, educational, industrial, recreational, and residential structures. He collaborated with prominent architects, including Peter Muller, further enhancing his architectural influence.

Mustafa’s designs reflect a blend of local traditions with contemporary styles. His architectural creations are marked by a deep understanding of African architecture and innovative design elements that set them apart. The 1960s, in particular, witnessed a surge in Sudan’s architectural development, a period in which Mustafa’s radical ideas played a significant role.

Notable Work

Some of his notable works include the Khartoum Villa, Al-Merrikh Stadium, Nifidi and Malik Mixed Use Developments, and the University of Khartoum’s Department of Biochemistry and Structures Laboratory. Other key projects include the El Turabi School, the El Ikhwa Building, and the Bank of Khartoum headquarters. Among his major works is the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA) headquarters, completed in 1980, which remains a hallmark of his design philosophy.

Architectural Legacy

Mustafa’s legacy as an architect and educator continues to influence Sudanese architecture today. His designs not only reflect the evolution of Sudanese architectural thought but also embody the broader trends of mid-century Modernism in Africa. Through his career, he helped establish a distinct architectural identity for Sudan, blending international modernist ideas with local cultural contexts.

Jaafar Tuqan was born in 1938 in Jerusalem, which was then part of Mandatory Palestine. He was the son of the renowned Palestinian poet Ibrahim Tuqan, who wrote the poem “Mawtini,” now Iraq’s national anthem. Tuqan was also the nephew of Fadwa Tuqan, a prominent Palestinian poet, and Ahmad Toukan, the former Prime Minister of Jordan.

Tuqan graduated from the American University of Beirut in 1960 with a degree in Architecture. After completing his studies, he worked as an architectural designer at the Jordanian Ministry of Public Works before joining the Beirut-based firm Dar al-Handasah Consulting Engineers. In 1968, he started his private practice in Beirut, and in 1973, he co-founded Rais and Tukan Architects with George Rais, a Palestinian architect of Lebanese origins. The firm eventually became Jafar Tukan and Partners Architects and Engineers and relocated to Amman, Jordan, after the Lebanese Civil War in the mid-1970s. In 2003, it merged with Consolidated Consultants for Engineering and the Environment, a Jordanian company.

Tuqan was responsible for several significant architectural projects, including the Municipality of Amman in Ras al Ayn, which he designed alongside Rasem Badran. He also worked on numerous notable buildings, such as the Jordan Museum, the Mahmoud Darwish Museum, the Jordan Gate Towers, and the Municipality of Amman in Ras al Ayn. These projects showcased several architectural features he employed in his work.

Jordan Museum

Tuqan designed the Jordan Museum, which opened in 2013. It is a contemporary structure located in Amman that presents the history of Jordan from its earliest inhabitants to the present day. The exhibits include ancient sculptures and the Dead Sea Scrolls. A closer look at the design reveals the museum’s modern aesthetic, with its distinctive façade highlighted by golden columns and the use of innovative materials such as concrete, marble, metal, glass, and roof tiles.

Mahmoud Darwish Museum in Ramallah

Tuqan created the design for the park and museum, which features a versatile hall, expansive spaces, water pools, an open-air amphitheater, and public gardens. The museum houses an electronic library with works by the late poet, along with several of Darwish’s personal items and photographs of him with family and prominent figures. At the entrance to the museum, a mural and a short biography of Darwish, presented in both Arabic and English, detail his life up until his death in August 2008.

Jordan Gate Towers

The Jordan Gate Towers are a prominent high-rise development designed to symbolize the modernity of Amman. The complex includes luxury apartments, offices, and a hotel, blending contemporary construction methods with traditional Arab architectural styles. Originally conceived as a landmark project, the Jordan Gate Towers aim to transform the Sixth Circle area of Amman into a sophisticated, high-rise district.

The Amman Municipality Building

Tuqan designed this project in collaboration with Rasem Badran. The building embodies contemporary design principles, integrating local materials and traditional architectural features. It incorporates modern elements like concrete, marble, metal, glass, and roof tiles, with local stone used as the main exterior cladding.

Awards
