Long before oil wealth, nation-states, and global fashion cycles reshaped the Gulf, women across its coastal societies wore a garment that translated cultural identity into form: the battoulah, also known as the burqa’. Neither jewelry nor veil in the modern sense, it was a rigorously coded object — one that shaped how women were seen, signaled social position, and anchored them within a shared visual order understood across the region.

Trade, Textiles, and the Making of a Gulf Form

The battoulah emerged from the maritime cultures of the Gulf, shaped by centuries of exchange across the Indian Ocean world. From at least the early modern period, Gulf ports were linked to India, Persia, East Africa, and southern Arabia, importing textiles, dyes, and techniques that women adapted locally. Despite its metallic appearance, the battoulah was not typically fashioned from solid gold. It was constructed from stiffened cotton or silk, dyed — often with indigo or other natural pigments — and treated to achieve a reflective surface in tones of gold, bronze, or copper. Its sheen reflected textile knowledge rather than raw material wealth, and its durability made it suitable for daily wear.

By the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, variations of the battoulah were widespread across what are now the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, parts of eastern Saudi Arabia, and the southern Gulf coast of Iran. It was not an imported curiosity but a locally standardized form, maintained, transmitted, and refined by women themselves.

Form as Geography — Regional Languages of the Battoulah

The battoulah was never singular. Its authority lay in variation. Shape, proportion, and finish differed from place to place, forming a visual language legible to those within it.

In the Emirates, styles tended to be narrow and sharply contoured along the nose, often finished in bright, polished gold tones. Omani versions were frequently broader and longer, sometimes extending toward the chin, echoing older South Arabian influences. In Bahrain and Qatar, forms often appeared squarer, marked by a pronounced upper panel, while Kuwaiti examples historically favored darker metallic hues and softer edges. These distinctions were not incidental. The battoulah functioned as geographic literacy, locating a woman within the Gulf’s social landscape without a word being spoken.

Social Meaning — Womanhood, Authority, and Visibility

Traditionally, the battoulah was not worn by girls. Its adoption marked a transition — most commonly marriage or adulthood — and with it a shift in social standing. To wear the battoulah was to be recognized as a woman with responsibilities, boundaries, and authority.

Crucially, it was not simply about concealment but about structured visibility. It framed the eyes, disciplined the face, and projected composure, allowing women to move through public life while commanding respect. In many communities, it was considered beautifying, lending gravity rather than anonymity. Among elder women especially, it became an emblem of experience and presence.

Craftsmanship carried meaning as well. Finer fabric, deeper color, and precise tailoring quietly communicated family standing and personal refinement, operating within an ethic that valued restraint over display. The battoulah did not shout status; it encoded it.

Transformation and Reinterpretation

The mid-twentieth century brought rapid transformation. Urbanization, expanded educational and professional roles for women, the spread of alternative veiling practices, and the influence of global fashion gradually displaced the battoulah from everyday life. Yet it did not vanish. Instead, it shifted registers, moving from daily garment to symbolic object.

Today it appears in museums, national celebrations, weddings, heritage festivals, and contemporary art. Designers reference it, photographers restage it, and institutions curate it as evidence of continuity. This evolution reflects not only loss but reinterpretation. The battoulah has become a site where questions of gender, memory, and authenticity are negotiated.

Reading the Battoulah Correctly

Contemporary encounters with the battoulah often reduce it to spectacle — a “metal mask” flattened into heritage imagery or aesthetic curiosity. Such readings miss its function. Historically, the battoulah was not decorative excess but social precision.

It organized the face without erasing it, asserted modesty without anonymity, and enabled women to move through public life while remaining legible to those who understood its codes. In a region where lineage, place, and reputation carried weight, it operated as a disciplined visual system — learned, maintained, and transmitted by women themselves.

What disappears when the battoulah is reduced to costume is not just a tradition, but a way of reading the world. Its shapes mapped the Gulf before contemporary political borders did. Its materials reflected trade networks rather than trends. Its authority emerged not from doctrine, but from practice.

To encounter the battoulah today — on the face of an elderly woman or behind museum glass — is to confront evidence: evidence of a culture that understood adornment as social intelligence, and of women who authored that intelligence deliberately and in full view.

Behind the Label

Few communities in the Middle East have been as misunderstood as the Alawites. Often invoked as a political shorthand or reduced to a sectarian marker, they are more accurately understood as the bearers of a complex religious tradition and a collective memory shaped by centuries of marginalization.

The Alawites — who call themselves ʿAlawiyyūn — are an Arabic-speaking community numbering between two and three million people, concentrated primarily along Syria’s Mediterranean coast, particularly in the Latakia and Tartus regions, with smaller populations in Lebanon and southern Turkey. Their name derives from ʿAli ibn Abi Talib, cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad.

Origins in an Esoteric Age

Alawism emerged during the ninth and tenth centuries, a formative period when early Islamic theology had not yet hardened into fixed orthodoxies. The tradition coalesced around teachings attributed to Muhammad ibn Nusayr, from whom outsiders long referred to the community as “Nusayris” — a term now rejected by Alawites themselves. This was an era of intense intellectual experimentation, when Shi’a mysticism, Greek philosophy, Gnostic symbolism, and local religious customs mingled freely.

From this mix arose a theology that privileged hidden meaning over literal interpretation. Alawite doctrine was never codified in written scripture accessible to all believers; instead, it developed as an initiatory tradition, transmitted orally and selectively. This esotericism would become both a defining feature of Alawite identity and a source of suspicion from surrounding religious authorities.

A Hidden Cosmology

At the heart of Alawite belief lies a symbolic understanding of the divine, often articulated through a triadic framework: maʿna (meaning or essence), ism (name), and bab (gate). In this schema, ʿAli is seen not only as a manifestation of divine essence but as a central figure embodying both divine and human aspects. The Prophet Muhammad is considered the veil or name through which the divine essence is revealed, while Salman al-Farisi, a companion of the Prophet, serves as the gate to esoteric wisdom and knowledge.

Alawite religious practice emphasizes symbolic interpretation over legalistic observance. Rituals like prayer, fasting, and pilgrimage are understood metaphorically, reflecting an inner spirituality rather than formal obligations. The community also holds beliefs such as the transmigration of souls, a concept that places it outside both Sunni and Shi’a orthodoxy. For centuries, these distinctive doctrines led to accusations of heresy, which was used in both the social marginalization and persecution of Alawites.

Secrecy as Survival

Secrecy is not incidental to Alawite tradition; it is foundational. Religious knowledge has historically been disclosed only to initiated men, and even then gradually. This guardedness was not a theological preference, but a response to danger. From the medieval Abbasid period through the long centuries of Ottoman rule, Alawites faced repeated campaigns of repression, heavy taxation, and social ostracism.

The result was a community that learned to conceal its inner life from the outside world. Outward conformity — presenting as generic Muslims — became a strategy of survival. Inwardly, shared rituals and narratives fostered cohesion and resilience. The Alawites endured not by proselytizing or asserting themselves, but by retreating, remembering, and adapting.

Mountain Life

Geography reinforced this social pattern. For generations, Alawites lived in the rugged coastal mountain ranges of western Syria, regions poorly integrated into imperial economies and largely neglected by central authorities. Life there was harsh, agrarian, and communal. Clan ties mattered more than formal hierarchies, and religious authority was diffuse rather than centralized.

This marginal existence further insulated Alawite belief from external influence, but it also entrenched poverty. By the late Ottoman period, Alawites were among the most economically disadvantaged populations in Syria — isolated from cities, education, and political power.

Colonialism and the Reversal of Fortune

The twentieth century marked a dramatic rupture. Following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, Syria came under French Mandate rule. Pursuing a strategy of divide and rule, French authorities cultivated minority communities as a counterweight to Sunni Arab nationalism. An autonomous Alawite state was briefly established along the coast, and minorities were heavily recruited into colonial military forces.

For many Alawites, military service provided unprecedented access to education, income, and social mobility. This pathway would prove decisive after independence, when the army became a key avenue of political power. Over time, Alawite officers rose through the ranks, culminating in the ascent of Hafez al-Assad, who seized control of the Syrian state in 1970.

Power Without Protection

The association between Alawites and political power is recent — and misleading. While the Assad family and many senior military figures were Alawite, the majority of Alawites remained rural, working-class, and distant from the levers of authority. Yet in the logic of modern sectarianism, collective identity eclipsed social reality.

During the Syrian civil war and recent conflicts, Alawites were widely perceived as synonymous with the regime itself, making entire communities targets of retribution. For many Alawites, this resurrected ancestral fears of annihilation, reinforcing communal solidarity forged through centuries of vulnerability.

Like any society, Alawite communities have contained internal disagreements, dissenting voices, and divergent political choices — realities too often erased when an entire population is flattened into a single narrative of loyalty or blame. Acknowledging the historical formation of Alawite fears does not diminish the suffering of other Syrians, whose losses and traumas during recent decades are no less real and profound.

Yet historical vulnerability does not fully explain how Alawite identity became entangled with the machinery of domination in modern Syria. The rise of Alawite officers within the military and security services did not occur in a vacuum of fear alone, but within a system that rewarded loyalty, silence, and the consolidation of power through kinship and regional networks. For some, especially those who ascended into the officer corps or party-state institutions, survival gradually blurred into privilege, and protection into control. These dynamics fractured Alawite society itself, producing sharp divisions between rural communities that bore the human costs of war and urbanized elites who benefited from proximity to the state. Acknowledging this history does not justify collective punishment, nor does it reduce Alawite identity to regime allegiance; it instead recognizes that communities shaped by exclusion can, under certain conditions, become participants in new hierarchies — even as many of their members remain marginal, fearful, and constrained by choices not of their making.

Faith, Identity, and Public Silence

Today, Alawite identity exists in a delicate balance between visibility and discretion. Publicly, many Alawites emphasize their Islamic credentials, often aligning themselves with Shi’ism. Privately, distinctive beliefs and rituals persist, largely unspoken and carefully guarded.

This duality is not hypocrisy but historical memory. The Alawite experience has taught that survival often depends on knowing what not to say, when not to explain, and how to remain legible enough to belong without revealing too much.

Beyond Regime and Sect

In contemporary debates, the Alawites are often discussed almost exclusively through the lens of power, loyalty, or culpability. That framing obscures more than it reveals. Long before their association with the modern Syrian state, Alawite communities developed under conditions of exclusion, economic marginalization, and religious suspicion, shaping patterns of discretion and inwardness that persist today.

Understanding this history does not require endorsing any political authority. It does, however, require separating a community’s inherited religious and social formation from the actions of states, elites, and armed actors who claim to act in its name.

Seen in this light, the Alawites are neither an ahistorical sect nor a monolithic political bloc, but a population whose past helps explain its worldview. Any genuine attempt to understand Syria — its fractures, its alliances, and its mistrusts — is incomplete without that nuance.

In the heart of Lebanon, a country known for its religious pluralism and historic role as a haven for the displaced, lives a resilient yet often overlooked Christian community: the Chaldeans. While Lebanon is home to 18 recognized sects, the Chaldean Catholic community, tied deeply to Iraq’s ancient Mesopotamian Christian roots, holds a unique and poignant place in the region’s socio-religious landscape.

Their presence in Lebanon is a story of displacement, faith, and enduring cultural identity – one that also resonates strongly with Arab Americans who share ancestral ties across Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon.

A Journey Rooted in Survival

The Chaldean community’s arrival in Lebanon dates back over a century. Small groups of Chaldean families – mainly from northern Iraq, southeastern Turkey, Syria, and Iran – fled persecution under the crumbling Ottoman Empire in the early 20th century. The first priest and approximately 25 families established the foundation of the Chaldean Church in Lebanon around 1920, following violence that targeted Assyrian and Syriac Christians.

But it was the recent decades – particularly after the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq and the rise of ISIS – that saw a significant influx. Thousands of Iraqi Chaldean families sought refuge in Lebanon, escaping targeted persecution, church bombings, and kidnappings that devastated Christian communities across Baghdad, Mosul, and the Nineveh Plains.

Lebanon, already strained under the weight of its own economic and political crises, nonetheless became, and continues to be, a relatively safe haven.

The Church at the Center

The Chaldean Catholic Eparchy of Beirut, established in 1957, serves as the spiritual and administrative heart of the community. It is an Eastern Rite Catholic Church in communion with Rome. This Eparchy operates under the authority of the Patriarch of Babylon, who is based in Baghdad, while ultimately recognizing the primacy of the Roman Catholic Pope.

Its leader, Bishop Michel Kassarji, born in Zahlé to a Chaldean Lebanese family, has become a voice not only for his constituents but also for numerous displaced Christians across the region. Under his direction, the Eparchy operates refugee centers, humanitarian aid programs, and educational support for thousands of Iraqi Chaldeans now living on the margins of Lebanese society.

Founded in 2017 by Bishop Kassarji, with support from the Chaldean Charitable Society in Lebanon and the Bidawid Foundation, this center operates as a free, non‑formal educational initiative within the Chaldean Relief Center in Sabtieh, Lebanon. It welcomes around 120 Iraqi and Syrian refugee children⁠ – typically aged 7 to 16 – offering them safe, compassionate learning environments to ward off illiteracy, child labor, and delinquency. Students are grouped into primary (7–9), junior (10–12), and youth (13–16) classes. Beyond core academics – Arabic, English, French, math, science, biology – the center provides music, theater, arts, sports, and psychosocial and awareness programs. Since 2020, it has implemented child protection policies in collaboration with Lebanese and international NGOs, and its faculty receive regular training. In recent years, it has expanded with a children’s choir, sports teams, summer camps, and adult education and life‑skills programs (like IT, soap‑making, agriculture, accounting). Starting in 2023, support from Monaco via the Edu‑Care projects further strengthened its mission, including enhancing students’ English and IT capabilities in partnership with Trainable.

The phrase “Love Is Contagious” appears prominently as the center’s slogan – encapsulating their spirit and approach and reflecting how they view education and community. The idea that compassion and support can spread from person to person is valuable and especially powerful within refugee communities. Through kindness, care, and learning, positive impact multiplies and ripples outwards, nurturing both the individuals and their broader community.

Living in Limbo

Today, an estimated 20,000-30,000 Chaldeans reside in Lebanon. While a portion are Lebanese citizens, others are refugees and asylum seekers – primarily from Iraq, with some from Syria. Many are undocumented and live without basic legal protections.

Unlike Syrian refugees, who benefit from UNHCR programs, Iraqi Christians often lack formal refugee status in Lebanon. This leaves them vulnerable: unable to legally work, access consistent healthcare, or secure safe housing. Most rely on under-the-table jobs and support from the Church or NGOs to survive.

Mira Kassarji, media coordinator for the Eparchy, reported that the church assists more than 2,000 families every month. They provide food kits, rent aid, medical care, and education programs. But the needs are greater than what they can provide.

Holding on to Heritage

In the face of economic hardship and political uncertainty, the Chaldeans of Lebanon remain committed to preserving their identity.

At the cathedral in Ba’abda, Mass is still conducted in Suret, a dialect of Aramaic spoken since the time of Christ. Children learn catechism in their mother tongue. Cultural programs celebrate the heritage of northern Mesopotamia – where many of these families trace their roots back thousands of years.

One Chaldean refugee, who asked to remain anonymous, said, “Lebanon is safer than Iraq. But we have no future here. We are neither recognized nor supported. Still, we won’t give up our traditions.”

For some, the ultimate goal is resettlement – many hope to join family members in the U.S., Canada, or Australia. Until then, Lebanon remains a place of waiting for some, and a new home for others.

The Call for Representation

Although officially recognized as a sect within Lebanon’s religious framework, Chaldeans remain politically underrepresented. Community leaders have consistently called for greater recognition, including a dedicated parliamentary seat – similar to other Christian minority sects like Armenians and Melkites.

In 2021, the Chaldean Church joined other Christian denominations in backing calls for an international conference to help stabilize Lebanon and protect minority communities.

A Link to Arab Americans

The story of Lebanon’s Chaldeans reverberates across the world – particularly in Arab American communities in Detroit, Chicago, and San Diego, where large Chaldean diasporas from Iraq have taken root.

Many American Chaldeans have relatives in Lebanon – parents, cousins, or siblings – waiting in limbo for visa approvals or refugee sponsorships. Some support them from afar with remittances and advocacy.

“I was born in Lebanon to Iraqi Chaldean parents,” one Arab American wrote on Reddit. “I live in the U.S. now, but I often think about how hard life was for my family back there. We keep our language and faith alive here too.”

This transnational connection reinforces the importance of global solidarity – and the role of Arab Americans in pushing for refugee aid, legal recognition, and preservation of Chaldean heritage both abroad and at home.

Looking Ahead

As Lebanon’s economic collapse deepens and its refugee policies tighten, the future remains uncertain for the Chaldean community.

Although Lebanese Chaldeans and Chaldean refugees share a common cultural identity, their experiences in Lebanon are markedly different. Variations in citizenship status and economic well-being influence the opportunities accessible to each group. Many in both groups feel invisible – caught between wars they fled and borders that won’t let them pass. Yet between it all, throughout the green hills of Lebanon, the spirit of Chaldean resilience carries on.

I recently visited the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. It was a sight to behold — filled with beauty, resonating with spirituality, and a sense of stillness. Yet what lingered with me was a much smaller, more modest space tucked within the vast basilica: the Chapel of Our Lady of Lebanon.

The chapel’s quiet simplicity and humble proportions stood in striking contrast to the surrounding opulence. It reminded me that Lebanon, though wounded today, holds an immense and ancient story — one carried by its many communities, each preserving its own traditions while contributing to a shared identity. Whether large or small in number, every group has shaped Lebanon in essential ways. No community stands alone in the story of this country. But before turning to some of Lebanon’s present challenges, it is important to begin where its identity first took root: in the deep, biblical, and historical soil of the land itself.

Lebanon In The Bible

Lebanon is mentioned seventy-one times in the Old Testament. It’s cedars (Cedrus Libani) were highly prized in ancient times with King David having used in it building his palace (2 Sam 5:11; 1 Chr 17:1), and King Solomon having used it in the construction of the temple and a palace for himself (2 Chr 2:3-8). It is also one of the few countries where Jesus visited. His first public miracle – where he turned water into wine (or grape juice depending on who you ask) – took place in Qana, which many historians believe is located in modern day Qana, in the South of Lebanon. The second miracle is the healing of the Canaanite woman’s daughter, as recorded by St. Mark (7:24–30) and St. Matthew (15:21–28) in the territories of Sidon and Sour (Tyre), which still hold the same names today. These areas notably represent one of Jesus’ few ventures into non-Jewish majority areas (Matthew 15:21; Mark 7:31). The historical significance of Lebanon doesn’t end with its mention in sacred texts; it extends to the development of Christianity in the region, which began with the early followers of Jesus and has shaped Lebanese culture for centuries.

The Maronites of Lebanon

The presence of Christianity in Lebanon began with Jesus’s visit and spread in the following centuries. The recognized Christian sects present today include the the Maronites, the Greek Orthodox, Greek Catholics, Armenian Catholics, Armenian Orthodox, Syriac Orthodox, Syriac Catholics, Assyrians, Chaldeans, Copts, Evangelical Protestants, and Roman Catholics. Lebanon has produced at least 21 Saints and 5 Blesseds.

One of the largest Christian denominations are the Maronites who derive their name from Maron, a 4th-century Syriac Christian hermit monk in the Taurus Mountains whose followers, after his death, founded a religious Christian movement that eventually became known as the Maronite Church. Starting in 402 CE, Maron’s first disciple, Abraham of Cyrrhus, set out to convert Phoenician polytheists in the coastal cities and mountains of Lebanon. In this period, the Maronites confined themselves mainly to the mountains of Lebanon in order to avoid persecution from various successive colonial empires. Physical traces of this practice can be found in places like the Qadisha Valley where cave churches were carved into cliff sides.

In the following centuries, the Maronite community grew in size and influence. During the papacy of Pope Gregory XIII (1572-1585), efforts were made in to bring the Maronites closer to Rome with the Maronite College in Rome (Pontificio Collegio dei Maroniti) being founded in 1584. In his travels through Lebanon in 1832-1833, French author and statesman Alphonse de Lamartine describes the Maronite monks as men who lived simply in addition to possessing wooden staffs and golden hearts.

By the early 1900s, the seed of Lebanese nationalism was reaching fruition and the Maronites played a significant part in the formation of the modern state of Lebanon when the Lebanese delegation led by Maronite Patriarch Elias Peter Hoayek presented the Lebanese aspirations for statehood in a memorandum to the Paris Peace Conference on the 27^th of October, 1919. Greater Lebanon was declared on the 1^st of September 1920, and Lebanese Independence was declared on 22 November 1943.

Famine during World War, the 1860 Mount Lebanon civil war and the Lebanese Civil War between 1975 and 1990 greatly decreased their numbers in the Levant. As a result, many emigrated abroad, with substantial diaspora presence in the Americas, Europe, Australia, and Africa. Today, the Maronites continue to play a crucial role in Lebanese society in Lebanese and abroad. Today, they are estimated to make up about 21 percent of the population in Lebanon.

The Orthodox Christian community in Lebanon, primarily part of the Greek Orthodox Church of Antioch, is one of the oldest Christian communities in the world. Their presence in Lebanon dates back to the early centuries of Christianity, and today they are concentrated in the northern regions (Akkar, Tripoli, Zgharta) and the Mount Lebanon range, as well as parts of Beirut.

During the Ottoman era, Orthodox Christians were part of the millet system, which allowed them religious and social autonomy. This helped foster a strong community with its own schools, churches, and leadership. In the 19th century, the Orthodox community grew through educational and missionary activities, and many intellectuals, including renowned writer Mikhail Naimy, emerged from this group. They were also key players in shaping Lebanese national identity and contributing to Lebanon’s cultural and intellectual life.

With the establishment of Lebanon’s independence in 1943, the Orthodox Christians were integrated into the sectarian-based political system, which granted them significant influence, including representation in parliament and government positions. However, the Lebanese Civil War (1975–1990) led to significant migration, with many Orthodox Christians fleeing to countries like France, Canada, and the U.S. Today, the Orthodox Christian population in Lebanon is estimated at around 300,000–400,000, making up about 8-10% of the total population.

Despite the challenges of war and migration, the Orthodox Christian community in Lebanon continues to thrive. They maintain strong religious traditions through churches and monasteries, while also preserving their cultural heritage. Beyond their religious heritage, the Orthodox played an important role in the Nahda, producing thinkers who shaped modern Arabic literature and philosophy. The Orthodox community continues to play a role in advocating for unity, tolerance, and stability, reflecting Lebanon’s pluralistic traditions.

The rest of the Christian minorities, which include Armenians, Melkite Catholics, Protestants, Chaldean Catholics, among others, are estimated to make up about 6.5% of the population in Lebanon and can be found distributed all throughout the Lebanese territory. And just as Christianity has had a profound influence on Lebanon’s heritage, so too has the Shia Muslim community.

The Shia Muslim community in South Lebanon is one of the oldest in the region and is part of the four main recognized Muslim groups, alongside Sunnis, Alawites, and Ismailis. Local Shia tradition traces the community’s origins to early Islamic history, with some linking it to figures like Abu Dharr al-Ghifari, a Companion of the Prophet Muhammad, and the early followers of Imam Ali. However, historical evidence points to the 9th century CE as the period when the Shia community began to flourish in Jabal Amel, where they established a strong tradition of scholarship and religious learning.

Over the centuries, the size and influence of the community fluctuated due to a combination of religious persecution and shifting political circumstances. Under Ottoman rule, Shia Muslims were often marginalized and placed under Sunni Hanafi jurisdiction. In the 13th century, the Mamluks carried out a series of campaigns to expel Shia populations from areas like Jabal Keserwan, which further strained the community’s growth.

The 11th century, however, saw a significant increase in the Shia population of Jabal Amel, largely due to the migration of Shia families from Kesserwan. This period also saw the rise of influential scholars like Shams al-Din Muhammad ibn Makki, who founded a school in Jabal Amel and contributed extensively to Islamic jurisprudence. Later figures such as Nur al-Din Karaki Ameli and Baha al-Din al-Amili also played crucial roles in shaping the intellectual and religious direction of the Shia community, with some scholars migrating to Persia during the Safavid era to help solidify Shi’ism as the state religion there.

Despite their religious and intellectual contributions, Shia Muslims continued to face significant challenges under Ottoman rule. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, many Shia scholars traveled to centers of learning such as Najaf in Iraq to deepen their religious education. In 1884, the first modern school in a Shia-majority area was founded, signaling the beginning of a shift toward modern education. Later, in 1909, Ahmed Aref El-Zein founded Al-Irfan, a journal that became a major platform for the exploration of social, moral, and intellectual issues in the region.

The establishment of the State of Greater Lebanon in 1920 marked a turning point for the Shia community. From that moment onward, the Shia moved from a position of political and economic marginalization to one of greater influence and contribution within Lebanese society. This transformation helped shape the development of modern Lebanon, with the Shia community becoming a key force in its political and cultural landscape.

Today, they are estimated to make up around 28.4% of the Lebanese population with significant diaspora populations in the Africa continent, Iraq and Iran. Alongside the Shia community, the Sunni Muslims have played a central role in Lebanon’s sociopolitical fabric.

The Sunni Muslims of Lebanon

I tolerate every thought, even if it contradicts what I believe, even if it is a destructive thought. I care about the thought for its own sake, from whatever source. There is no spring without winter, nor the splendor of flowers without a storm.

The Sunnis of Lebanon have a presence in the region dating back to the Muslim conquest of the Levant between the years 634 and 638 CE. The Muslim Arab armies marched onto Beirut, Sidon, Jbeil, Baalbek and the Beqaa, while Tripoli was conquered between the years 639 and 640 CE.

Like all of Lebanon’s religious groups, their history was shaped by the historical forces at work in the region. The regions that make up the modern Lebanese state were, for most of Arab Islamic history, sections of the areas ruled by the Sultan or Caliph, whether in Baghdad, Istanbul or elsewhere. An exception might be during the Fatimid rule which came before the Levantine Crusades, after which, the Sunnis returned to their previous relationships with the authorities during the Ayyubid dynasty and Mamluk Sultanate rule, continuing all the way through the Ottoman Empire era. Lebanese Sunnis fared relatively better under the rule of the Ottoman Empire than did the other religious sects in Lebanon. Although the Ottomans ruled loosely, Sunnis in the coastal cities assumed a degree of privileged status which ended with the French mandate.

Initially many of the Lebanese Sunni Muslims, especially among the rural and urban classes, did not wish to be separated from the Sunni community of neighbouring Syria upon the declaration of Greater Lebanon in 1920. Eventually however, many within the Sunni community, including the influential Sunni merchant families of Beirut, supported the National Pact of 1943 since they shared the collective vision of a liberal Lebanese mercantile republic.

The Sunni community in Lebanon produced a multitude of historical and influential figures such as Abdallah al-Alayli, intellectual and author, Abulfattah Al-Zoubi who was a jurist and writer, Muhammad ibn Khalil al-Qawuqji, who was a renowned scholar, preacher and jurist, as well as Ahmad Faris al-Shidyaq who was a foundational figure in modern Arabic literature.

Today, they are estimated at the number 28.7 percent of the Lebanese population and are concentrated in Beirut, Sidon, Tripoli, and in the outskirts of the Akkar and the central Beqaa region. They have significant diaspora presence in the nearby Gulf Countries where many reside there for work.

Not to be overlooked, the Druze community, which has its origins in Ismaili Shi’ism, represents another significant minority in Lebanon, adding to the rich tapestry of religious diversity.

The Druze of Lebanon

The true human nature is gentle and divine, and if the heart is inhabited by the wisdom of goodness, it will become a shining light, and the mind is God’s gift in his creation to distinguish between good and evil, right and wrong.

The Druze faith finds its birthplace in Egypt as an offshoot of Ismaʿili Shiʿism during the reign of the sixth Fāṭimid caliph, al-Ḥakim bi Amr Allah who ruled from 996–1021. Certain Isma’ili theologians instigated a movement proclaiming al-Ḥakim to be a divine figure. This idea was judged as heresy by the Faṭimid religious establishment, who held that al-Ḥakim and his predecessors were divinely chosen, but were not themselves divine. In 1017, the doctrine was preached publicly for the first time, causing unrest in Cairo.

Within this emerging movement, there were two main proponents of the doctrine, Ḥamzah ibn ʿAli ibn Aḥmad al-Zuzani and Muḥammad al-Darazi. Hamzah seems to have been favoured by al-Hakim, with al-Darazi eventually being declared an outcast and disappearing. In spite of al-Darazis disappearance, many continued to use his name as a reference to the faith.

The Druze community gradually vanished in Egypt but found a home in isolated areas of Lebanon of Syria, where their proponents established significant communities. Al-Muqtana retreated from public life in 1037 but continued to write letters expounding Druze doctrine until 1043. It was at that time that the Druze faith closed itself off to the outer world.

Today, the Chouf mountains of Lebanon are home to the world’s second largest Druze population. The center of Druze spiritual life is found in the Chouf Mountains Lebanon, where the Sheikh Al-Aql, their spiritual leader, has his base.

The Druze faith is a monotheistic and Abraham religion whose main canons proclaim the unity of God, reincarnation, and the eternal nature of the soul. Most of their religious practices are kept secret, they do not permit non-Druze to convert into the Druze faith, and as a result, marriage outside their faith is strongly discouraged.

The Epistles of Wisdom are the foundational and central texts of the faith. The Druze faith finds its origins in Ismaíli Shi’ism, and was influenced by various other religions including, Christianity, Zoroastrianism, Buddhism, Pythagoreanism, and Neoplatonism, among other philosophies and beliefs. This led to a unique and secretive doctrine based on esoteric readings of various scriptures, which emphasises truthfulness and the role of the mind in distinguishing between good, evil, right, and wrong. The Druze believe in reincarnation and theophany. Today, they are estimated to make up around 5.2% of the Lebanese population.

Culturally, the Druze have contributed deeply to Lebanon’s traditions of learning, ethics, and community life, preserving a heritage rooted in wisdom and scholarship. Their emphasis on education and oral history shaped the character of the Chouf and left a lasting mark on Lebanon’s cultural landscape.

While the Druze community thrived in Lebanon for centuries, another religious group, the Jewish community, also made their home in Lebanon, with a history rooted deeply in several regions of the country.

The Jews of Lebanon

It is very important for people to know: A Lebanese is a Lebanese. No matter where he goes, he will never forget his country.

The Jewish presence in Lebanon dates back to biblical times. Local legends suggest that the shores of Jiyeh were where the Prophet Jonah landed after being swallowed by the whale. Historically, Jews lived in Beirut, Sidon, Tripoli, Deir Al-Qamar, and other towns. In the first century AD, King Herod built a temple in Sour for the Jewish community, and by the sixth century, synagogues had been established in Tripoli and Beirut.

The community flourished during the 18th and 19th centuries, with many Jews immigrating from Greece, Turkey, Syria, and Iraq, settling in Lebanon due to its status as a safe haven. The Lebanese Jewish community grew after 1948, making it the only Jewish community in the Arab world to do so. Jews integrated fully into Lebanese society, contributing to the country’s pluralistic identity and holding positions in the army and internal security forces. They also established schools, including the Talmud-Torah Selim Tarrab School and the Alliance Israélite Universelle School in Beirut.

However, the exodus of Lebanese Jews began in 1958 and continued through several wars. Today, estimates suggest that only 100-500 Jews remain in Lebanon, though some reports indicate the number could be as low as 100. Despite this, the Lebanese Jewish diaspora thrives worldwide, particularly in places like the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and France. In Brooklyn, several synagogues continue the practice of Judaism with a Lebanese influence.

The distinct religious communities in Lebanon are not only defined by their beliefs and practices but also by the sacred sites that have become symbols of their spiritual and cultural heritage.

Sites of Pilgrimage

The historical presence of the different religious groups in Lebanon can be documented through the various sites of pilgrimage located throughout the country.

In 1867, American Author Mark Twain visited Lebanon. He stopped by the town of Karak Nuh, a village in the Beqaa Valley which is famous for claiming the burial site of Noah, the Abrahamic patriarch. In his 1869 book, The Innocents Abroad, he wrote:

Noah’s tomb is built of stone, and is covered with a long stone building. Bucksheesh let us in. The building had to be long, because the grave of the honored old navigator is two hundred and ten feet long itself! It is only about four feet high, though. He must have cast a shadow like a lightning-rod. The proof that this is the genuine spot where Noah was buried can only be doubted by uncommonly incredulous people. The evidence is pretty straight. Shem, the son of Noah, was present at the burial, and showed the place to his descendants, who transmitted the knowledge to their descendants, and the lineal descendants of these introduced themselves to us to-day. It was pleasant to make the acquaintance of members of so respectable a family. It was a thing to be proud of. It was the next thing to being acquainted with Noah himself.

About a century later, in 1963, American Jazz musician Duke Ellington visited Lebanon to play at the Casino Du Liban with his orchestra. During his time there, he visited the Our Lady of Lebanon Shrine in Mount Harissa and was left with such a strong impression that he composed and dedicated a song to her on his 1967 album, Far East Suite. The Shrine was built in 1904 in honor of Mary, mother of Jesus, and is highlighted by a large, 15-ton bronze statue.On its base lies the chapel, around which a walking trail winds around the exterior towards the main statue of the Virgin Mary which stands at about 28 feet tall, and has a diameter of about 17 feet meters. The shrine draws in millions of visitors of all faiths every year.

Another inconspicuous site in Sidon is the tomb of Zebulon, who was the tenth son of Jacob, and the founder of one the twelve tribes of Israel. It is still a pilgrimage site for Lebanese Jews today.

The Khalwat al-Bayada is the main sanctuary and theological school of the Druze sect. It is located near Hasbaya in Lebanon and was founded in the 19^th century by Sheikh Hamad Kais. It features a large, circular stone bench which sits to an ancient oak tree known as the ‘Areopagus of the Elders’ which is isolated the trees in nature. The Khalwat provides around forty hermitages for Al-ʻuqqāl (the initiated Druze) at various times throughout the year.

While Lebanon’s religious landmarks offer a window into its ancient and diverse past, the modern-day significance of Lebanon as a refuge for the displaced adds a profound layer to its identity, one that continues to shape the nation’s role on the global stage.

Lebanon, the Refuge

Lebanon cannot be abandoned in solitude… For more than 100 years, Lebanon has been a country of hope. Even in the darkest periods of its history, the Lebanese people have maintained their faith in God and have shown the ability to make their country a place of tolerance, respect and coexistence…

Lebanon’s story is not simply the story of its mountains, its valleys, or its famous cedars. It is the story of the peoples who sought shelter in those mountains, who carved homes into cliffs, built homes, monasteries, mosques, and synagogues, and wove their memories into the land. Each community, carrying its own wounds, and wisdom, helped shape a nation that has long stood as a haven in a turbulent region. Over time, these same communities — once scattered, vulnerable, and seeking refuge — became the very builders of modern Lebanon, whose foundations took formal shape with the creation of the Lebanese state in 1920.

Today, Lebanon endures extraordinary hardship, is infested with politics and rampant corruption, yet the spirit that sustained it for centuries remains unbroken. In a country of roughly 6.8 million, an estimated 1.5 million Syrian refugees and around 500,000 Palestinian refugees now reside within its borders — the highest number of refugees per capita anywhere in the world. The exact figures are imprecise and constantly shift, but the reality is unmistakable. Lebanon, while struggling under economic collapse, political paralysis, the scars of war, and the devastation of the 2020 Beirut port blast, carries a burden far larger than its size. And this crisis falls heavily on the Lebanese themselves, whose daily lives have been upended by a collapsing currency, failing institutions, and the slow erosion of a once-vibrant middle class. It is a crisis within a crisis — where a nation in distress should be responsible for those who seek safety within it, while its own people search for stability and dignity.

And yet, despite this immense strain, Lebanon continues to reveal the truth that has defined it across millennia: that it has always been more than just a place. That despite the mismanagement and corruption, it has been a refuge and a promise — a land where the displaced could find a relative measure of dignity, and where communities long at risk elsewhere were able to build lives, memories, and meaning — even in imperfect conditions. This legacy endures even now, in one of the most difficult chapters in Lebanon’s modern history.

And in this enduring role, Lebanon echoes a universal call, one captured in the words of American poet Emma Lazarus:

Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free…

And so, just like that modest chapel in the vast basilica, Lebanon continues to hold its role in a difficult region — not through brute power, but through a resilience capable of carrying far more than its proportions suggest.

Note: This essay focuses on only a selection of Lebanon’s historic communities. Many others — including Alawites, Ismailis, Armenians, Melkite Greek Catholics, Syriac Catholics and Orthodox, Chaldean Catholics, Assyrians, Protestants, and smaller Christian and Muslim denominations — have likewise contributed to the country’s cultural and spiritual life. Their stories are no less essential; they remain beyond the scope of this piece due solely to its length.

The streets are alive with people, chattering and laughing, weaving between stalls piled high with food, souvenirs, and handmade crafts. The air smells of sizzling treats and fresh pastries, and everywhere you look, there’s something colorful to catch the eye. Above it all, the church bells ring nonstop, tossed back and forth by village men and boys who are determined to outdo one another. Inside, the church never empties — its wooden pews always crowded with worshippers lost in prayer. You’re in the heart of at the Mar Sassine Church festival in Beit Meri.

A Mountain Parish with Deep Roots

Nestled above Beirut at well over 700 meters, the church of Mar Sassine in the village of Beit Meri rises quietly into the air. The name Beit Meri tells its own story: derived from Syriac Beth Marya, “House of God”, it reveals the sacred dimension of the place.

A place of faith, shared life and community. For more than two centuries, it has witnessed the seasons of the mountain village: baptisms and weddings, funerals, harvests and festivals, quiet Sunday liturgies, and the laughter of children in its gardens.

Who Was Mar (Saint) Sassine?

Saint Sassine is the figure to whom the church is dedicated, and his story has been passed down mostly through tradition. According to one account, he was the bishop of Cyzicus, an ancient metropolis situated on the southern coast of the Sea of Marmara (ancient Propontis), near the modern towns of Erdek and Bandırma. He refused pagan worship, was tortured and later executed around 328 AD. But his legacy in Lebanon lives on in several churches bearing his name, and on his feast day which is celebrated yearly.

Architecture and Setting

The light filters in softly, the sense of space invites reflection, the voices of the congregation rise gently in prayer. The church’s position on the village square makes it simultaneously part of the daily village rhythm and set aside for the sacred.

The church is built of local limestone, its warm tones of white and pale yellow blending into the sun‑lit slopes of the village. Rather than decoration for decoration’s sake, the design emphasises endurance and devotion: plain limestone walls, simple arched windows, a pitched roof, not trying to dominate, but to belong. Inside, the layout follows traditional Eastern Christian forms: a main altar devoted to the Eucharist, flanked by two smaller altars — one dedicated to the Virgin Mary, the other keeping the Holy Sacrament.

Festivals, Families, and Village Life

Around the church steps and on its plaza, life unfolds. Each year the feast of Saint Sassine becomes a mini‑festival: after the liturgy a procession winds through the village, families gather for shared meals under pine trees, children run between adults, old friends greet each other and newcomers are welcomed. The parish grounds also host fairs, vintage‑markets, and craft gatherings.

The Church Today

In a country where so much is uncertain, the church of Mar Sassine still stands today as an anchor to its community. It exemplifies the mountain‑church tradition of community — resilient, modest, and rooted in place. It draws together villagers and visitors, faithful and curious alike, as a model of living, breathing tradition.

Lebanon is in the dark, and its horizons are cloudy — and I don’t just mean that figuratively. Power cuts are no longer a temporary inconvenience but a way of life. In many areas, the state electricity provider, Électricité du Liban (EDL), delivers one to four hours of electricity per day. The rest of the day, citizens depend on other venues for electricity generation including private generators — costly, polluting, inefficient, and often unreliable.

But this isn’t just an article about energy. It’s about a nation in crisis, a population burdened beyond measure, and a public sector that can no longer deliver even the basics.

Yet there is a clear path forward. It doesn’t rely on loans, foreign aid, or selling off national assets. In fact, it doesn’t require a single dollar from the Lebanese treasury. What it does require is political will to let the private sector do what the public sector has shown itself unwilling and incapable of doing.

A Collapsed Energy Sector

Lebanon’s financial meltdown has left the government unable to pay for fuel, maintain power stations, or invest in grid infrastructure. This has resulted in a massive energy deficit: it’s estimated that the country needs roughly 3,800 MW of electricity per year, but it’s production is now estimated to be around 1,500 MW to 1,800 MW – this is being delivered by heavy fuel oil and private generators, local generator subscriptions, and solar panels in the form of decentralized rooftop systems. This has created a two-tiered, inefficient system that punishes ordinary citizens and stifles the economy.

To make matters worse, EDL’s losses contribute around $1.5 billion annually to the national deficit — a budget already stretched beyond its limits.

The Government is Broke – But the State Isn’t

While the Lebanese government is financially paralyzed, the state still exists. Lebanon still owns land, infrastructure, and institutions. But these are not for politicians to give away. They belong to the people — and in times of crisis, they must be protected, not liquidated.

Any viable solution must therefore avoid selling national assets, avoid incurring new debt, and avoid tapping into public funds. That’s where the Revenue Sharing Concession (RSC) model comes in.

A Solution: Revenue Sharing Concession (RSC)

An RSC agreement is a legal contract in which one party (the concessionaire) is granted the right to operate a business or use resources on another party’s property or public land for a specific period. These agreements outline the rights, obligations, and responsibilities of both parties, detailing things like fees, operation terms, asset ownership, and required insurance.

Under a RSC agreement, a concessionaire (a private company) takes full responsibility for financing, building, and operating the country’s power infrastructure for a set period — typically 20 to 25 years. At the end of the contract, all assets are transferred back to the Lebanese state, in full working condition. The state can continue to utilize external management or internalise it completely.

No loans, bailouts, or public spending.

How It Works:

1. The concessionaire raises the money. It assumes 100% of the financial risk — no state funds involved.

2. It designs, sets up, and manages power plants using a mix of solar, wind, and natural gas technologies suited to Lebanon’s geography. In this phase, an assessment is undertaken into the viability of using existing stations, and the introduction of new power stations which utilize natural gas rather than fuel.

3. It modernizes the grid to distribute electricity efficiently and fairly.

4. It sells electricity to the government or directly to users at a regulated rate on a revenue-sharing basis that the treasury starts receiving in year after set-up is accomplished.

5. After 20–25 years, the infrastructure is returned to the state, unless a new concession is negotiated, taking into consideration any economic benefits.

This is not privatization. The infrastructure remains Lebanese. The company only operates it under strict conditions and a defined timeline within the scope of a concession agreement.

What Would It Take? A Breakdown of Lebanon’s Energy Needs

To close the electricity gap, here’s what a private operator might build:

The estimated cost for the installation of utility-scale renewable energy projects, particularly solar and wind farms ranges between $800,000 to $1,000,000 per 1 MW.

• Solar Power Plants:

  • 1000 MW of capacity

  • Cost: ~800 million–1 billion

  • Benefit: Taps into Lebanon’s excellent solar potential

• Wind Power Installations:

  • 500 MW of capacity

  • Cost: ~$400 million to $500 million

  • Benefit: Reliable supply during nights and cloudy days

• Natural Gas Plants:

  • 800 MW of capacity

  • Cost: ~$640 million to $800 million

  • Benefit: Provides stability when renewable output is low

Total investment: ~$1.84 to $2.3 billion — fully funded by the private company.

With electricity priced at around $0.10 per kilowatt-hour, the company could generate an estimated $2 billion in annual revenue (assuming continuous generation of 2,300 MW and factoring in real-world inefficiencies). This will allow the concessionaire to recover costs and make an exceptional return on investment, while generating hundreds of millions a year in profit for the Lebanese government through a revenue sharing model.

Revenue Sharing – A Sliding Scale That Benefits All

To ensure a fair and sustainable partnership, the concession agreement would include a revenue-sharing model that evolves over time — rewarding the concessionaire early on for its investment and risk, while gradually increasing the government’s share as the project stabilizes.

The proposed sliding model could begin with a 30%–70% split in favor of the concessionaire and shifts to 70%–30% in favor of the Lebanese government by the end of the 20-year term.

This sliding scale ensures:

• Early cost recovery and ROI for the investor

• Increasing public benefit as infrastructure matures

• Full ownership transfer to the state after 20 years — along with a modern energy system and a growing revenue stream.

To further enhance this solution and maximize the use of Lebanon’s resources, there is also an opportunity to address another pressing issue: Lebanon’s waste management crisis.

Lebanon’s Waste Crisis and the Role of Waste-to-Energy

Lebanon is facing a severe waste management crisis, with overflowing dump sites creating a disastrous environmental situation. Garbage piles up on streets and beaches, causing health hazards and toxic pollution. This issue not only harms public health but also worsens Lebanon’s energy shortage by failing to convert waste into a usable resource.

A solution exists: modern, pollution-controlled waste-to-energy (WtE) incinerators. Unlike traditional incinerators, these advanced systems operate with zero dioxins and use cutting-edge filtration technology to eliminate harmful emissions. By converting waste into electricity, Lebanon can reduce landfill burden and generate clean, renewable power for the grid.

This approach offers a dual benefit: it addresses Lebanon’s growing waste problem while providing a reliable energy source, all without additional strain on the country’s finances. Integrating waste-to-energy facilities into the energy mix could be a crucial step toward both environmental cleanup and energy security.

Why This Model Works for Lebanon

• Not a single dollar comes from the treasury. The project is entirely financed through private capital. Lebanon avoids the burden of new loans and conditions from international lenders.

• Public infrastructure remains public. After the concession period, it all returns to the Lebanese state.

• Thousands of local jobs in construction, operations, and maintenance.

• A major shift toward clean energy, cutting pollution and long-term costs.

• A modern grid means less fuel imports, fewer outages, and real energy security.

• It can also provide a solution to the existing defunct waste management catastrophe.

Could an American or International Company Do This? Certainly.

Large international energy companies — including American firms with experience in the region — have the technical capability and financial capacity to take on a project of this scale. Many already operate in countries with far more complex challenges.

In fact, Arab American entrepreneurs and engineers are well positioned to help connect the dots — advising on contracts, lobbying for transparency, and ensuring such a deal benefits Lebanon’s people, not its political class.

But this doesn’t have to be an American company. It could be an East Asian, European, Gulf, or regional firm — anyone with the capacity, credibility, and commitment to operate under a fair contract.

The flag matters not; what matters most is that the deal is clean, the terms are clear, and the outcome is accountable.

What’s Needed Now? Political Courage and Public Pressure

Lebanon’s energy collapse is not just a technical failure — it’s a political one. But a solution exists, and it does not require the permission of corrupt factions to function. It requires:

• A legal framework to allow revenue sharing concessions in energy

• Transparent bidding and regulation

• Strong public support to prevent interference or exploitation

A Power Solution for Lebanon, Without the Price Tag

Lebanon’s people have sacrificed enough. They should not have to give up their land, their resources, or their future just to keep the lights on. They should not have to think about this basic necessity. A well-structured concession agreement offers a practical, tested, and effective solution. This methodology ultimately utilizes both traditional and renewable energy systems.

It brings the power of private investment to a public need — empowering the country without selling out.

It’s time for Lebanon to step into the light.

Clean drinking water is a basic human right — and ensuring it is not as difficult as we might think. A recent Lebanese study provides a clear diagnosis of the country’s water problems, and more importantly, it identifies solutions that are within reach.

Researchers from across Lebanon tested 200 water samples from five governorates — Nabatieh, Beqaa, Mount Lebanon, Baalbek-Hermel, and South Lebanon — and found that every single water source contained some form of contamination, whether chemical or microbial. The study looked at water from household taps, bottled water, wells, springs, and filtration stations.
